Knowledge sharing, methods and tools to improve the effectiveness, efficiency and impact of agriculture initiatives in Sudan

FAO takes part in the first National Knowledge share Fair in Sudan organised by The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (MoAI) which is an exciting and “out-of-the-box” opportunity to share knowledge, discuss, learn and explore creative and innovative experience and influence future development activities in the agriculture sector. The four days event is organised in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). It will be taking place at the Police Club, Khartoum, on February 2nd - 5th, 2015.
A knowledge share fair is a buzzing, interactive and collaborative workspace, with lively discussions and practical demonstrations that include the application of knowledge sharing tools and methods. There are facilitated sessions to learn how others have improved the effectiveness and quality of their work, and opportunities for networking, allowing people to connect and link ideas as well as exchanging opinions in a natural way and relaxed setting. A share fair is not a goal in itself, but the beginning of a process. It will create new partnerships; new exchanges between people that would like to work together, in a different way.
The Fair is organized as a first time event in Sudan to demonstrate how active and strategic participation, knowledge, experience sharing improves the effectiveness, efficiency and impact of any work, thereby setting the example and encouraging participation to existing and future other knowledge sharing and coordination platforms. As well, it will bring together around 200 professionals from the agriculture sector in Sudan, including extension MoAI departments from federal and state levels, agricultural research corporations, UN organizations, international and national NGOs, public and private sector organizations and institutions and other civil society actors involved in rural an agricultural development projects.
What will the contributors gain in participating?
The fair will provide the participants with an interactive forum to share and learn from a wealth of experiences of the benefits of collaboration and institutional, local and indigenous knowledge sharing and explore creative and innovative experience through examples that illustrate how knowledge sharing can improve their respective work and influence future development activities in the agriculture sector. More specifically, the Fair will allow national experts to:
• Share and learn from each other’s good practices;
• Experiment with tools and methodologies for knowledge sharing;
• Create linkages and networks for future collaboration between the institutions and organizations;
• Develop ideas to support and enhance knowledge sharing within and across the institutions and organizations.
• To create a knowledge sharing and networking environment, whereby projects and interested entities will share their learning and benefit from the experiences of others.
• To capitalize on the national Sudanese capacities built in KariaNet in KM-KS by testing how different knowledge sharing methods, and tools, can be applied to the work that they do.
FAO is providing support to the MoAI for technical preparation, organization and facilitation of the event and is contributing USD10, 000.
FAO has longstanding technical experience of knowledge sharing methodologies and tools in Sudan. Under the FAO Sudan Institutional Capacity Program Food Security Information for Action (SIFSIA) programme and The Food Security Policy and Strategy Capacity Building Programme (FSPS/CBP) funded by the EU, FAO has helped the establishment of functioning the food security and nutrition information systems , federal and state platforms for evidence-based and inclusive policy decision making and strategies and inclusive and consultative mechanisms in which lower-level governance structures and major non-state actors become part of the prioritizing and decision making processes. FAO supports the Government’s effort to design policies and investment plans and programmes to address food security and nutrition, sustainable use and development of the natural resources for agriculture, livestock and rural livelihoods. Currently FAO is assisting the Government of Sudan in engaging into a south to south knowledge network cooperation and in developing and designing a quality National Agricultural Investment Programme (NAIP) to have a clear strategy for agriculture sector development, leading to informed decision/ policy making for better national economy performance in line with the government priorities articulated in the CPF. Both will be presented at the Fair. The first of the 4 key pillars of the FAO 5 years Plan of Action (2015-2019) under the Sudan Country Programme Framework (CPF) focuses on strengthening knowledge management and sharing system to support the development of sound food security and nutrition policies and resilience programming and represents more than USD 35 million or 17% of the FAO PoA total budget, in addition to other programmes that are already ongoing.
