Jan 18, 2015-Khartoum-SudaneseOnline-United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan) (UNMISS) disclosed that the first ever deployment of a Chinese infantry battalion is expected in South Sudan.
UN Mission in the country (UNMISS) says the deployment is part of the surge authorized by the UN Security Council in December 2013 to increase the number of UN military peacekeepers in South Sudan to 12,500.
The 700-member Chinese battalion will be based in and operate out of UNMISS headquarters in the South Sudanese capital, Juba.
They will come under the overall command of the Mission's Sector South commander Senior Colonel Ning Ma of China.
UNMISS says its primary mission is to protect civilians living in or near the Mission's UN House property, carry out patrols in and around Juba, escort humanitarian relief supplies and guard UN assets.
There are currently around 350 Chinese engineers, medics and other-non combat personnel in the country.
