KHARTOUM

(

30 Sep

.) -

Security officers confiscated the entire print run of El Ahram El Yowmdaily newspaper on Monday. No reason was given.

The Minister of Information, Ahmed Bilal Osman, however, recently announced that the government decided to stop “all exceptional measures” imposed by the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) on the Sudanese media. Any violation committed by the press would be left to the judiciary.

Last Wednesday, the print run of El Jareeda daily was confiscated.

This year, newspapers and journalists in Sudan have been facing a sharp increase of restrictions, prosecutions, and harassment by NISS officers. The security apparatus intensified its strict control over newspapers and the media, prosecuting those who have “crossed the led line”, besides forcing the press to cover particular types of news items.
