Today, 19th of July 2014, at 5 p.m. A group of masked individuals have attacked the journalist Osman Mirghani and beaten him unconscious inside his work premises in Altayar newspaper.
SudanChangeNow strongly condemns this brutal attack, which we consider a violent and dangerous turning point in the escalation of the crackdown against freedom of expression and freedom of journalists. This brutal attack came as an inevitable result of the shameful role of the state in suppression of freedoms and its notion of rejection other opinion among other restrictions of freedom of the press.
We demand an immediate investigation of this heinous crime and to hold its perpetrators accountable. We also call on all the forces of good conscience to form a broad solidarity front to protect freedoms of opinion, defending the freedom of journalism as the fourth estate protecting the social rights freely and transparently.
