Police disperse crowds attending student funeral

Khartoum-A lot of people including activists, politicians, students and youths have attended the funeral of Ali Abakar Musa, the student at faculty of economics at Khartoum University, who was gunned down at the university campus on Tuesday following a public discussion event, organized by Darfur students, to protest deterioration of the security and humanitarian situations in the troubled region.
Security forces have used teargas and batons to disperse the crowds who were doing anti-government chant.
The press office of the Police said in a statement that Khartoum University witnessed on Tuesday limited acts of riots made by some students, who belong to Darfur associations at the university, resulting in the killing of student and injury of another one.
The statement said that police will exert maximum efforts to reveal the circumstances of the incident and find out the culprit. The statement added that this group tried to go to streets when the police interfered and used teargas alone.
In the meantime, the administration of Khartoum University suspended studying at all departments as of Wednesday and for indefinite date. The council of deans of the university said in a statement that the council formed, in a meeting on Tuesday, a fact-finding committee to investigate into the incidents.
Students of the University, some teachers and relatives of the killed student made a sit-in at the Khartoum Hospital on Tuesday demanding to know the place of the body, and to receive it. The sit-in continued until Wednesday morning when the gathering moved to Bashayer hospital mortuary in Khartoum where they received the body.
On its part, the Sudanese Authority for defending rights and freedoms has called for formulation of independent committee to investigate into the Khartoum University incidents, bringing the culprits to justice and briefing the public opinion on the incident.
It stressed the importance of releasing all detainees and stopping the wide detention campaign immediately.
The Sudanese Marsad for Human Rights said in a statement that the government is responsible for raiding into the university buildings, and for the unjustifiable use of excessive force.
