The African Union warns Sudan and South Sudan of taking unilateral actions on Abyei the region
Khartoum-The African Union Peace and Security Council urged on Tuesday the two governments of Sudan and South Sudan not to take any unilateral actions on the issue of Abyei region
In communiqué released on Tuesday, AUPSC warned the two countries that any unilateral decisions regarding the disputed area of Abyei might impede progress towards the implementation of the commitments made by Khartoum and Juba governments to resolve the issue together.
A referendum in the contested region was to be held simultaneously with that in South Sudan in January 2011, but both Sudan and its southern neighbor failed to agree on who was eligible to vote.
While Khartoum demands participation of the Arab Misseriya in the referendum vote, South Sudan says only the Dinka Ngok tribal groups from its nine chiefdoms should participate in the much-anticipated plebiscite.
AUPSC called on the two presidents to proceed with the implementation of the Agreement on Temporary Administrative and Security Arrangements for the Abyei Area that was signed on 20 June 2011, urging for facilitation of the rapid and safe return of refugees and displaced persons, assist with the rehabilitation and development of the communities in and adjacent to Abyei, and provide for peaceful migration of nomadic pastoralists during the coming dry season.
