ICC urges American administration to arrest Sudan's president, if he visits New York to
Khartoum-International Criminal Court (ICC) urged American administration on Wednesday to arrest Sudan's president, Omar al-Bashir, if he visits New York to attend U.N. General Assembly next week.
Sudanese authorities revealed that they have applied for a U.S. visa Sudan's president who is accused of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur region.
The spokeswoman for the US State Department, Marie Harf, has condemned any potential effort by al-Bashir to travel to New York.
"Before presenting himself to UN headquarters," Ms Harf said, "President Bashir should present himself to the ICC in The Hague to answer for the crimes of which he's been accused."
Washington said it had received the application and called the request “deplorable”. However, the United States is not a member of the Hague-based ICC so would not be legally bound to cooperate.
The ICC said it had reminded Washington of two outstanding warrants for al-Bashir's arrest dating from 2009 and 2010 for alleged genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Sudan has strongly criticized the statements made by the Harf, saying that U.S. is not qualified morally, politically or legally to give any lessons on international law or human rights
In statement is issued on Tuesday, Sudan's Foreign Ministry expressed its full Sudan's right of to participate in the meetings of the United Nations General Assembly session 68, asking the United States to fulfill its duty as a headquarters to issue the necessary visas as soon as possible.
