The policy of, baiting the bear, aiming at luring Russia into closer strategic ties with Sudan, followed by our isolated dictatorial regime , looks rather naïve and based on inapplicable and totally illogical assumptions. Because, the Russian bear has neither capital surplus to blow on an unpopular African dictatorial tyranny, nor is it willing to use its claws to defend the cornered regime. In fact ,Russia , does not have the slightest intention of siding with Sudan in its cat-and-mouse – game with the west , as any such miscalculated step could further worsen its -already-in-bad-situation relations with the dominant and economically mighty west. Russia has no relish for going back deeper in the tunnel of economic sanctions, at a time it is exerting tremendous diplomatic efforts seeking to ease the back-breaking sanctions already in effect, imposed on it by the west, particularly its huge frozen assets and state-owned properties in Europe and the United States. Therefore the dream scenario of the ruling junta of Sudan, to capitalise on the western-Russian differences to their advantage, sits on no solid basis. Because ,Russia is not ready and/or willing to pursue an aggressive anti-western foreign policy , only because the shaky regime of Sudan is ready to give a handful state-owned Russian mining companies license to explore for gold in Sudan ؟ In reality, Russia is only using Sudan as an additional chessman to play with on the Middle Eastern political chess- board. So, the fuss made here, about (the strategic relations؟ ) between Russia and Sudan , in the mainly state-owned local media outlets , has no basis, misleading and altogether untrue. Because, the relations between Russia and Sudan, which is seen by Russian politicians only as a tiny arms client, will never go beyond diplomatic hand-shakes, courteous smiles and frequent use of veto in the United Nations, not in favour of Sudan, as the regime prefers to depict, but to manoeuvre and/or undermine and resist western designs in the global political sphere. but ,again , our out-of-trim regime has no other option ,but to cling to the faint hope of maintaining any level of relations with Russia for domestic consumption, since , its efforts to normalise its relations with the western powers came to a deadlock. Sadly though, our regime is now eyeing with much uneasiness and envy, to the emerging economies in its close vicinity. The likes of the so recently poor, aid-recipient and land-locked Ethiopia, which has now , in a relatively shot pace of time, became the No. 1, investment magnet in the whole African continent. Reputed international development firms are now racing against time to gain foot hold in the vibrant and promising country, which developed up-to-date attractive investment policies. China, which our regime considers as its trusted and reliable ally, is, of all countries, the biggest investor in Ethiopia, erecting land-mark infrastructure projects that changed the face of the country. Pity, how our corruption-infested tyranny is still harping on Sudan being the gate-way to Africa, while our minsters here, openly ask for bribes, seeking to harvest every single penny to their ends, while incessantly CALLING on foreign investors to come over and invest in Sudan ,an uncalculated and unjustified risky step they are keen not take , preferring to invest their ill-gotten fortunes and stolen –public money in Ethiopia, smart people, No؟
