Luka Biong Deng

(South Sudan, Norway, UK and Australia) Luka Biong Deng (DPhil) is also a Global Fellow at Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), Associate Fellow at Carr Centre for Human Rights Policy at Harvard Kennedy School and a fellow at Rift Valley Institute. He is a recognized expert on the affairs of Sudan, South Sudan in areas of poverty, vulnerability, famine, civil wars, constitution-making, and state-building. He served for five years as a Minister in the Office of the President of South Sudan and as a National Minister of Cabinet Affairs of the Sudan until he resigned in May 2011 after Government of Sudan invaded Abyei, his home area, in May 2011. He also worked as a Senior Economist for the World Bank. He received his PhD in 2004 from the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) at University of Sussex, UK and earned a Master of Arts in Economics and a Master of Business Administration from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium and BSc (Honours) from Faculty of Economics and Social Studies at University of Khartoum, Sudan. He has published scholarly articles in a wide array of international journals and contributed with many chapters in various books. Mr. Deng (DPhil) was a Director of Centre for Peace and Development Studies at University of Juba, South Sudan. He is also in charge of Kush Inc., a non-profit Organisation promoting peace, stability and development, with a particular focus on South Sudan and Abyei area.
