    Slavery in the Sudan
    History, Documents, and Commentary
Mohamed Ibrahim Nugud and Translated By Asma Mohamed Abdel Halim

    Palgrave Macmillan, August 2013
    ISBN: 978-1-137-28602-4, ISBN10: 1-137-28602-4,
    5.500 x 8.500 inches, 216 pages, 5 b/w tables,

riginally published in Arabic and now available for the first time in English, this groundbreaking study offers a rare window into the history of slavery in the Sudan, with particular attention to the relationships between slaves and masters. Thoroughly documented, it is one of the few extant publications on enslavement of Africans by Africans, providing valuable context to current issues of global concern and combating persistent myths about African slavery.

    Praise
'The late Mohamed Ibrahim Nugud wrote a book on slavery in the Sudan the like of which had not seen the shelves of any Sudanese library, and for that matter, of any library. It is as thorough and provocative as it is honest, self-deprecating, and readable. The editors have succeeded in ably rendering into English not only the author's complex and challenging ideas but also his clever nuance and palatable eccentricity. Slavery in the Sudan is an encyclopedic work no self-respecting library anywhere in the world should be without.' - Ismail H. Abdalla, Professor Emeritus, The College of William and Mary in Virginia
    About the Author(s)
By Mohamed Ibrahim Nugud and Sharon Barnes

Mohamed Ibrahim Nugud attended Sofia University in Bulgaria after his dismissal from the University of Khartoum for political activities, graduating with a degree in economics and philosophy. He was elected to the Sudanese Parliament twice during the country's brief periods of democratic rule, in 1965 and in 1986. In 1989, a military coup led to the parliament being dissolved, and Nugud was detained and put under house arrest. He nonetheless managed to disappear until 2005, when he emerged to lead the communist party until his death in 2012. His book on slavery relations in the Sudan is one of six that he published in Arabic.

Re: slavery in the sudan M.I. Nugud translated (Re: Asma Abdel Halim)

    Dr. Asma...
    Overwhelming news.
Congratulations on achieving such remarkable job to which we should all be grateful!
Of course I read the book in Arabic and I am pleased those who don't read Arabic can now have access to this
    valuable well authored document.

I was honored during Nugud's loss anniversary to monitor a seminar around the book in Khartoum North Communist Party House,
The attendance was huge and the speakers presented and commented on the book eloquently ; discussion continued as vigorous as
it started and we all felt a step promoted in the way of knowledge.
I hope your translation finds its way here , I am eager to get the book.
Allah yar7am Nugud... A great thinker of his time...and his books make him: of all times!

Thanks again Asma for a great contribution...much appreciated.

Thank you Asha, Taj and Mustafa:
I had a great time translating the book and answering questions.
the book is available at book sellers here in the states; it is of course hard cover so they may sell it ot libraries and others who can afford it for 85 dollars. I intend to buy some at a discount and see if i can bring them to the Sudan.
    Asma
