Re: My visit to Hershey Medical Center (Re: عزان سعيد)

    Milton S. Hershey :1857-1945

Raised in rural central Pennsylvania, hampered by the lack of a formal education and nearly bankrupt by the time he was 30, Milton S. Hershey went on to become not only one of America’s wealthiest individuals, but also a successful entrepreneur whose products are known the world over, a visionary builder of the town which bears his name and a philanthropist whose open-hearted generosity continues to touch the lives of thousands.

    A successful entrepreneur...eventually.
Following a four-year apprenticeship as a teenager to a Lancaster, Pennsylvania, candy maker, Hershey in 1876 attempted to start his own candy business in Philadelphia. Despite six years of hard work, it failed. So he moved to Denver and found work with a confectioner who taught him how to make caramels using fresh milk. He then started up a second candy business in New York City. It also failed. Undaunted, he returned to Lancaster and once again tried making a go of the caramel business. This time, it worked. Soon, his Lancaster Caramel Company was shipping all over the U.S. and Europe, employing 1400 people and turning him into one of the area’s leading citizens.

    But what about the chocolate?
It was at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago that Hershey first became fascinated with the art of chocolate making. While there, he purchased some German machinery, had it shipped to Lancaster and began producing chocolate coatings for his caramels. But aware of the growing demand for chocolate itself, he soon started the Hershey Chocolate Company. For years, he worked at perfecting a viable recipe for making milk chocolate -- a process which up to then had been kept a closely guarded secret by the Swiss. Finally, through trial and error, he hit upon the right formula of milk, sugar and cocoa that enabled him to realize his dream of mass producing and distributing milk chocolate candy. What had once been a luxury for the rich, was to become an enjoyment that anyone could afford...the Hershey bar.

A new business needs a new location.
With his Hershey Chocolate Company growing by leaps and bounds, Hershey decided to sell his caramel company (for $1 million, an enormous sum in 1900!) and devote his attention to making chocolate. Discovering a need to expand his production capacity, he began looking around for a suitable place to build a new factory. He found it in nearby Derry Township, where he had been born. Convenient to the port cities that could provide cocoa beans and sugar, surrounded by dairy farms and endowed with a hardworking populace, the area seemed ideal. In 1903, he broke ground.

Building a town, not just a company.
Hershey’s success was not simply a matter of luck. Having learned from his past failures, he had become a shrewd and astute businessman. He believed, along with the more forward-thinking industrialists of the age, that workers who were treated fairly and who lived in a comfortable, pleasant environment would be better workers. Accordingly, he set upon building an infrastructure to take care of the people who were employed by his company. He had plans drawn up for a model community that included housing for executives and ordinary workers alike, schools, churches, parks, recreational facilities and a trolley system. Unlike other “company towns,” Hershey’s was not intended to exploit its resident workers, but rather to provide for their welfare. As time went on, Hershey saw to it that the town (named Hershey, naturally) added a community building, a department store, a convention hall, an amusement park, a swimming pool, and schools. Lots of schools.

“To train young men to useful trades.”
For the farm boy who never had much chance at education himself, providing that opportunity for others was always an important priority. As early as 1909, Hershey and his wife Catherine established the Hershey Industrial School, a school for orphan boys. Today named the Milton Hershey School, it has since opened its doors to girls as well. He also made sure that the town of Hershey had the finest elementary and secondary schools possible. There were even plans for a junior college. In 1918 and with no fanfare, Hershey transferred the bulk of his considerable wealth, including his ownership in the Hershey Chocolate Company and other enterprises, to the Hershey Trust to be held for the Hershey Industrial School.

    A legacy that lives on.
With the death of Milton Hershey in 1945, the company, town and institutions that bear his name were well positioned to continue and grow. The Hershey Chocolate Corporation has evolved into The Hershey Company, a profitable company encompassing a range of products found in homes throughout the world. The town of Hershey, with its many attractions, has become a popular destination for both vacationing tourists and business conventioneers. The Milton Hershey School, along with Hershey’s other philanthropic endeavors, have expanded and prospered, with the school housing and educating hundreds of boys and girls. In a long and useful life, Milton S. Hershey proved himself to be a courageous entrepreneur, a determined builder and a compassionate humanitarian.

Re: My visit to Hershey Medical Center (Re: عزان سعيد)

    Hershey Medical Center :

In 1963, The M. S. Hershey Foundation offered $50 million to The Pennsylvania State University to establish a medical school and teaching hospital in Hershey. With this grant and $21.3 million from the U.S. Public Health Service, the University built a medical school, teaching hospital, and research center. Ground was broken in 1966 and Penn State's College of Medicine opened its doors to the first class of students in 1967 and Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center accepted the first patients in 1970.

Re: My visit to Hershey Medical Center (Re: عزان سعيد)

    Dear Azaan

Hershey is really a beautiful place. Having lived in Pennsylvania for fifteen years, Hershey has indeed been Pennsylvania's play and fun grounds for many years. I have the fondest of memories on the Pennsylvania Turnpike and old exit 24 (Lebanon / Lancaster) and then you either turn left to Hershey Park & Medical Center or right to beautiful Lancaster through the small but infamous city of Manheim crossing over beautiful Amish country, real farmers-market and thousands of exquisite green hills and open lands. The seen that you come across are nothing short of breathtaking and these back roads really bring you the taste of real America, the farmers and the true taste of the Heartland. New Jersey has green as the Garden State but nothing is compared to Pennsylvania specially when the fall arrives and you get every possible color and combination thereof of leaves from yellow to orange to brown to dark red ... a true beauty. I used to tell my friends that this seen really cleans your mind before your eyes.

The first time I came to Hershey was for a rather sad event where a friend's daughter has fallen sick and was transported by an ambulance from Philadelphia's St. Christopher's Hospital for Children. Both parents were known as the kindest people in Philadelphia. In spite of the two or more hours of driving from Philly, but everyday many people drove back and forth to see her and support her parents. In no time everyone in the hospital or the medical center knew the family and were taken by this unbelievable community and later on they knew about Sudan through the gentle and caring feelings of the Sudanese people for each other. Many memories come to mind when I and many Sudanese, Arab and Americans remember these days. We were all very close to this small family: the father was the son of one of the greatest poets in Sudan, he was just like his father in being Gentle and sensitive beyond description, and he used to cry a lot even more than the mother ... I remember that everyone used to ask him to pull himself together for the sake of his wife and little daughter but he couldn't .... He knew that and said it, We knew that and kept quite and respected his feelings. Sadly, the little girl passed away and the family was in grief for a very short while. SHORT ..... because Allah blessed and rewarded them with another child a boy who Subhan-Allah was born the very same day his sister passed away.

The support came from other people also. The staff at Hershey were very compassionate and understanding, the mother had all her pre-delivery checks done and received optimum care. Their housing and accommodation was completely taken care of courtesy of Ronald McDonald Foundation. (For those of us who are not familiar with that, another Great Philanthropist is Ronald McDonald owner of the famous McDonald's food chain, who built a full world class accommodation facility that is competitive with a 5-Star hotel next to every major children's hospital to aid parents to care for their children and the daily rent for the first three days is $15 a day and $10 after that and if the family can't afford that fees can be waived, also food and many services are provided to the parents by volunteers from the community).

There was also a female Sudanese practicing physician who worked there by the name of Alawia, who offered a great deal of help and support to the family and here husband an economist by the name of Dr. AbuShowk .... a wonderful couple who even used to live close by. They along with another specialist from Sudan and lives in Harrisburg area made a generous offer to cover all the medical expenses for the little girl. Imagine the medical expenses for many month of treatment and intensive care for a person that you knew only a few weeks. (I wish our esteemed physicians in Sudan are half as caring as these genuine people). Alhamdu- lilah the expenses were covered by the state's children program. And we all thanked them for such a kind gesture.

Hershey also has the chocolate factory that you mentioned and the famous museum and the street that is made entirely of chocolate and together with Lancaster make a great children's destination for fun an learning. Many great Television shows started there and they also have famous train stations that shaped America's history. Children find great fun in Thomas-the-train program that come to Hershey/Lancaster area every year. This is one of the memorable times my children had in their life.

Truly, Pennsylvania is beautiful place to live, work and have wonderful memories.

    Ayman
