The President of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute, Mr. O-Gon Kwon, today welcomed the deposit by Malaysia, on 4 March 2019, of its instrument of accession to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

President Kwon stated: “On behalf of the Assembly I wholeheartedly welcome Malaysia to the Rome Statute family and I congratulate the government and the people of Malaysia for this important step in combating international crimes in order to promote global peace and security. This commitment sends a strong signal to the Asia-Pacific region and the world, reinforcing the independent system of international criminal justice to fight impunity and prevent the most serious crimes under international law. I am looking forward to Malaysia’s active participation in and contribution to the Rome Statute system, and a vibrant cooperation between Malaysia and the ICC. Hopefully other States will emulate Malaysia and also become a part of this system of international criminal justice.”

The instrument of accession was signed by the Malaysian Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr. Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah, and was deposited with the Secretary-General of the United Nations on 4 March 2019.[1] The Statute will enter into force for Malaysia on 1 June 2019 in accordance with article 126(2) of the Rome Statute.
