The Sudan Democracy First Group (SDFG), would like to draw the attention of the international community to the fast-political developments in Sudan and call upon all state and non-state actors to exert pressure on the Government of Sudan (GoS) to restrain its Security Forces, Riot Police, Rapid Support Forces and the Army, from using lethal and excessive force against peaceful protestors.
As you may be aware, since December 17, 2018, thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of many towns and villages across the country, protesting lack of and the high prices of basic commodities, confiscation of fundamental and basic rights, corruption and the absence of any credible inclusive political process for change in Sudan. In the face of these legitimate and peaceful protests, the GoS responded with aggressive measures including indiscriminate firing of live bullets on the crowd of protestors, causing death and life-threatening injuries, beating with batons and water hose and firing tear gas at pupils, women and elderlies. Coupled with these apprehensive actions, the GoS also launched a far-reaching wave of arrests against civil and political activists and leaders across the country.
SDFG is closely following the situation in different parts of the country and as it stands now, believe that the protests will increase in numbers and intensity. Moreover, professional organizations, with the support and participation of many civil and political organizations, are planning a peaceful march to the Republican Palace to deliver a petition to the government.
Learning from the experience of the last five days of unabated protests and the how the GoS reacted to these peaceful protests, SDFG is calling upon all state and non-state actors in the international and regional community, specially their representatives in Sudan, to mount pressure on the GoS to abide by its own constitution and its commitments to provisions of the international laws, conventions and norms of human, civil and political rights that warrants peaceful demonstration, assembly and expression. The GoS, must issue a standing order to all its forces NOT to use excessive force against peaceful demonstrators and and must made it clear to its forces that anyone who use aggressive means against the demonstrators will be held responsible. Moreover, the GoS should immediately arrest members of its forces who took the lives of twelve young, including children, protestors during the last five days, must be arrested and present to the court of law.
