European Union Ambassadors call for more support to the internally displaced in the Blue Nile State

Ambassador Tomas Ulicny, Head of the European Union Delegation to Sudan, and
other EU Ambassadors visit Al Azaza Camp for displaced people in the Blue Nile State

A European Union ambassadorial delegation completed a one day visit to Al Damazin, Blue Nile State on 21 November. The delegation was composed of the ######### of diplomatic missions from the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

The European diplomats met with the Governor of the Blue Nile State and his cabinet to exchange views about the humanitarian and development situation. The delegation further met with all the international organisations working in the State and was briefed about the main humanitarian and development challenges, as well as work that needs to be carried out to address them. The EU Ambassadors listened to the elders at the Al Azaza camp for internally displaced people and those benefiting from the humanitarian aid. During a stop at the Al Roseires Dam, the European diplomats discussed its potential for irrigation and electricity generation.

Upon return to Khartoum Airport, Ambassador Tomas Ulicny, Head of Delegation of the European Union to Sudan told the journalists: “The Ambassadors of the European Union completed a one day visit to Al Damazin. The European diplomats are firmly convinced that peace talks should resume immediately, to create an environment that would allow the continuation of development assistance and the delivery of humanitarian aid. The role of women in peace processes was emphasised. Humanitarian access is a priority and many children are in urgent need of vaccination. Assistance should never be denied, especially when there are urgent needs.”

He further said: “The European Union reminds all sides of the need to respect international humanitarian law, and calls on the Government of Sudan and the Sudanese armed opposition to restart peace talks to lift the suffering of the innocent civilians. Everything should be done to avoid civilian displacement.”

“The visit showed that there is an urgent need for more development and humanitarian assistance to the Blue Nile. This requires facilitation by the Sudanese government for the international organisations. Their visits to assess the needs in different sectors should be welcomed.”

The Ambassadors of the European Union countries are deeply concerned by the stories from the displaced and their host communities and they call on the Sudanese parties to respect the plea of the people for peace and stability. Ambassadors also inquired about the expected impact of the delayed rainy season.”

The EU support in Blue Nile State is focused on food security, primary education and conflict reduction. These ongoing EU initiatives exceed 11.2 million Euro.
