Egypt settles (2) million Egyptians in Halaib: Sudan MP warns

Khartoum-SudaneseOnline-Sudan’s Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency of Halaib trainable , Ahmed Issa, revealed that Egyptian authorities had recently settled (2) million Egyptians in disputed area, besides appointment of more than (300) Egyptian in administrative jobs Issa told Al-Rai Al-A’am newspaper on Sunday that Egypt’s government had established factories for fish canning, biscuits and consumer products, disclosing that Sudan’s Government parties and officials from Parliament are watching closely what is going on in the area, adding that he has submitted detailed information to the Parliament's subcommittees of the security, the defence and foreign on movements of Egyptian authorities. Sudan PM revealed that he has made proposal to Parliament to work parallel settlement projects in the area through establishing schools, students housing and villages, warning that settlement of so many Egyptians is extremely dangerous. The dispute over the region started in 1958 for similar reasons when Egypt refused to allow Sudan to conduct elections in the region which prompted military buildup after which Sudan lodged a complaint with the UN Security Council (UNSC) that has been renewed ever since. In 1995 tensions renewed after Egyptian and Sudanese security forces in the region killing and wounding soldiers on both sides. Egypt has moved to assert it control over Halaib triangle by building various projects and distributing ID cards to its local people. It has also rejected proposals by Sudan to resort to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to resolve the matter with its Southern neighbor.
