Eid Mubarak Asma and Mustafa.
That is refreshing....

Real episode:
The student started translating the letter into Arabic,

Dear Miss Halliday
الترجمة:
عزيزتي فقد اجازات

The teacher wrote a comment:
Check the spelling of the original: Holiday not Halliday.

(teacher nationality: guess Asma)!

: Why is this place sooooooo dead؟؟؟؟؟
That was your question.....
Allow me to answer....
(I assume you say: 'Go ahead').

People here , including you ofcourse, do not abide to the rules of conversation!!!
You are 'invited' to talk; you do 'gladly as you are talkative any way:me that is';
and no one responds, you venture again ; no one responds; your 'natural' complex
shivers and nudges you: don't be talkative! Sooooo, you shut up being yet another one
who violates rules of communication........

It takes 2 to make life lively and when there is face to face communication it works as eyes and
other parts of the body help, but in our case we need to activate our sense of distant communication...
Since I joined this Board I have scheduled fixed time for checking to see what is going on and interact
when necessary. And I noticed that Arabic Board members do that to a great extent. So the place is always
lively even when half contributions are just'gibbering'. At least it gives a feeling of presence and a space
for compare and contrast kind of reading.

So..
This is my contribution to the many people who asked your question on this side....Be
responsive and give some of your time to the responsibility you shouldered when you chose, or
accepted to be a member in a community...even Mustafa's Ha Ha Ha was a blessing to the heart
as it shows he cares..
Check your posts and direct a word to each and everyone who cared to read you and see....
And when people don't respond try to be less professional, don't talk 'shop' to the public.
We are not all sophisticated doctors of..... but we love knowledge and we are great readers.
(You can quiz us if you like..)ha ha ha.

Did I talk too much??
Sorry Asma , I know you know I am still a teacher at heart!
Love to all.

Dear Mustafa and Aisha
Guilty as charged ya Aisha, I contributed to the "killing of this place"
and No, you do not talk too much, I am a lawyer by training turned teacher for the past ten years, you don't want to be in the same room with me. Your messages are more than welcome;
Now I have to at least give reasons for not being here. This is the end of the semester, just two weeks and we are out, so i fell victim to questions from Students who are pulling all nighters and waking up mid-day to ask me "Did we have class today? What did I miss?" of course you did not miss anything how could I ever teach and you were not in class.
I also have to grade papers and look at our internet classroom to see who took the quiz that had been there for 24 hours. Yeah, you guessed right, about three students did not even know that it existed.
Anyway I am also having a good time with the majority who are active and would discuss some issues that were in the news the day before.
As a fellow teacher you will identify.
stay tuned for the next one it is great

During the resistance to the British Administration some people took to the Legislative Assembly in a rowdy demonstration. The British administrator came out with the well-known translator Ustadh Forawi, he asked what did they want. The leader of the demonstrator said:
الهزيز والرزيز البرة ده سببه السككي واللككي الجوة دة
ترجم يا فوراوي

You certainly have a handful to deal with.
But have a break from time to time; they say it is good for the brain.
And..
Do continue your translation schemes..Legal translation is one of the sordid
areas that I never ventured to go through. Dr. Saadiya El Amin was aour heroine
as she always took those classes and she 'trained' and encouraged me to take
Military translation which I enjoyed emmensely but can't say I was successful.
We turned the class into a research-centred activity rather than theoretical translation;
and competed in collecting terms and phrases and styles used in the Military
language.
So, come along, we are waiting; but I warn you , forget about the tons of money
or press Mustafa to tell you how it could be reached, personally, I haven't seen it yet.

she is my friend and classmate. we went to Shendi secondary school together. best time of my life was high school.
my best regards to her.
try to translate what puzzled Mr. Forawi.
Ask Mustafa about how to make money out of translation? you got to be kidding the guy is doing it for free.

We tell you when you come..first time no pay your lunch on us! I will make sure that it is Saadeya's

If Ustaz Forawi was daring enough, he should have said:
He said( The buzzing and booming outside is caused by the dump launatic inside!)
.. and suffers losing his job of translator.

Comment:
Retaining the sound of الهزيز والرزيز in hustle and bustle played the trick!
also out here and in there for البره ده والجوه ده is a good choice!

See??
Translation that easy!
No need for a degree in translation...
Well done Avocado!

No offence to the good translators out there.

Dear Asma and others,

Happy new year,

I juts discovered this treasure!

Reminds me of a funny situation during one edition of Dubai Air Show. During a press conference, the correspondent of Asharq Al Awsat newspaper volunteered to translate for the western officials as he was fielding questions by reporters. Before asking, an Arabic daily reporter said he is going to ask سؤال افتراضي and then proceeded with his question.

The translator hesistatntly told the official: "This is a ...... suppose-itional question ...."

That official was kind enough to tell him how good his translation was and that sometimes, the right words just escape one as they talk, only to find even better ones.

He turned to the reporter and said: "I am glad to answer your hypothetical question. However, suppositional is absolutely right."

The smile on the translator's face was priceless

ha ha ha
I call him a daring translator... a "coward" one would miss out what he doesn't get.

We just hope they avoid that famous translation of the : القنبلة الذرية = the offspring bomb.

Asma? Are you within hearing reach?
Happy Independence Day and New Year.....
No Sudan visit yet?
Couldn't use the messenger service..

Then he may survive some of the examples

And how about:

Salam Asma ...Welcome back ...The place was even 'deader' without you.
Glad you enjoyed it enough to call your serious vacation the best time.

It is refreshing to know that even in US there are places where there is no e media!
Makes me feel grateful for my wireless connection.

My father, a ref. in Arabic Language, used to call me عاشة without the hamza..so I
prefer his pronunciation as asha; as a matter of fact he was a friend and colleague
of your father if you are from Alamara Taha??
I feel chatty today, have you noticed?
Cheers..

The resurrection rate is really high on this post. Let us keep it up.
You probably heard the joke about Khrushchev trying to ask other of states to take the body of Stalin off his hands, everyone refused. Finally Ben-Gurion of Israel stepped up and said he would take Stalin’s body but he added a warning, “You know Khrushchev the resurrection rate is very high in that land or ours.”
No my father is not from Alamara Taha, but one of those Tahas is our in-law. My father was also a teacher, retired as an educational inspector, and he also taught Arabic and spent some time explaining to me what Asma' meant, mainly it did not mean "names".
Yes, one good thing in the USA is you can choose the type of environment you need, so when the hotel boasts about having free Wi-Fi you have the choice of leaving your laptop at home.
