need help

while reading and translating about slavery during almahdiyya i ran into some expressions in the description of slaves
e.g. a female slave may be described as رباعية and a male may be described as خماسي
what do these Arabic words mean?

I think its an old local lang :) , maybe it define words as: fat,thin etc. ??

quantum anything is a picnic compared to translating a letter from Alkhalifa Abdullahi. you should try sharpening your Arabic by reading some :).
while translating I ran into the word Amrad أمرد and after a short search i found the word "glabrous" a professor of English sowre that i made it up, but two days later she came back and said "guess you chose the right word, and it is not even archaic English, it is in use."
it is quite a job, and entertaining some times.

Just found this, looks like the Arabs do not agree on one meaning. I think you are right ya Mohamed it pertains to size. it is obvious from the literature i have that the people concerned (slaves) were not youngsters. it must be their width.

خمس: قوله في المختصر في باب السلم يقال في العبد: أنه خماسي أو سداسي، وأنه يصف سنه. قال الرافعي: واختلفوا في تفسيره، فقيل: المراد بالخماسي والسداسي التعرض للقدر يعني: خمسة أشبار أو ستة، وقيل: المراد السن يعني: ابن خمس أو ست، ومن قال بالأول حمل قوله يصف سنه على المعنى الثاني، ومن قال بالثاني حمل قوله يصف سنه على الأسنان المعروفة، وأنه يذكر أنه مفلج الأسنان أو غيره، وذلك من طريق الأولى دون الاشتراط.
وحكى المسعودي: أن الخماسي والسداسي صنفان من عبيد النوبة معروفان عنده. قلت: قال البيهقي في كتابه رد الانتقاد على ألفاظ الشافعي رضي الله عنهما: قد اعترض الشافعي رضي الله عنه في هذا، فقيل: إن أهل اللغة يقولون: عبد خماسي، ولا يقولون: عبد سداسي ولا سباعي. قال: وجوابه أن الأزهري قال: الخماسي الذي يكون خمسة أشبار، وإنما يقال: خماسي ورباعي فيمن يزداد طولاً، ويقال في الثوب سباعي.
قال الأزهري: والسداسي في الرقيق والوصائف أيضًا جائز أيضا عندي. قال البيهقي: وقال أبو منصور الخمشادي في كتابه: اختلفت العرب في السداسي، فمنهم من ينكره ومنهم من يجوزه كالخماسي. قال البيهقي: وبلغني أن ذلك لغة هذيل، ثم روى البيهقي في ذلك حديثا من حديث عبد الله بن عتبة بن مسعود ابن أخي عبد الله بن مسعود، قال: “أذكر أن النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم - أخذني وأنا خماسي أوسداسي، فأجلسني في حجره، ومسح رأسي ودعا لي، وأدركتني البركة”.
خمع: قال صاحب المحكم: خمعت الضبع تخمع خمعا وخموعا وخماعا عرجت، وكذلك كل ذي عرج وبنو خماعة بطن.
