The British Ambassador to Sudan, H.E. Michael Aron welcomed around 400 guests at his residence to mark the occasion and to sing happy birthday together for The Queen. The guests in attendance included politicians, journalists, civil society members and British Citizens gathered to celebrate the event. In his speech, Ambassador Michael Aron focused on the importance of peace and the strengthening of UK-Sudan relations. He said: ‘’This year is the beginning of a new chapter in relations between the UK and Sudan and I hope it will also be the year peace returns to Sudan from Karima to Kauda and from Jebel Taka to Jebel Marra. As far as the situation here in Sudan is concerned we welcome the decision of the Government of Sudan to sign the roadmap prepared by the AUHIP. We also welcome the confirmation by the Government that the National Dialogue is open to all Sudanese political parties and that they will respect the decisions of the 7+7 mechanism and the opposition groups. Sudan’s wars have gone on too long. We hope that 2016 will be the year peace is achieved. For its part the UK will do all it can with its allies to support the AUHIP, the Government of Sudan, the armed groups and the opposition parties to secure this goal.’’ Ambassador Michael Aron also reminded his guests that this year marks the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare, the great playwright and poet who lives on through his works, which are loved around the world. The Ambassador invited guests to celebrate Shakespeare’s legacy by reciting extracts from his works for an interactive video.
