Hundreds of Sudanese journalists protested on Monday against confiscation of (14) newspapers by Sudan’s National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) in front of the country’s National Council for Press and Publications. In statements it issued on Monday, General Union of Sudanese Journalists (GUSJ) expressed its deep grief and sorrow for the confiscation of the paper by NISS, considering the step as setback in press freedoms and inconsistent with the constitutional development, the climate of freedoms and the national dialogue in the country. The Union noted that confiscation was done without notifying the relevant authorities such as GUSJ and the National Council for Press and Publications, expressing its concern about the extraordinary procedures in the face of (14) newspapers away from the Press and Publications Act governing the press practice in the country The newspapers seized were Al-Tayar, Al-Rai al-Aam, Al-Intibaha, Akhir Lahza, Al-Ahram al-Youm, Awal al-Nahar, Al-Watan, Al-Sudani, Alwan, Al-Saiha, Al-Mijhar al-Siyasi, Al-Dar, and Hikayat The country’s journalists described the step by the Sudanese authorities as a major setback for civil liberties, adding that it is a positive signal for the expression of opinion, especially with the forthcoming presidential elections scheduled for next April.
