Sudan refuses to address Abyei issue outside the agreements signed with the South Sudan
|
Khartoum-SudaneseOnline-Sudan’s government stressed that South Sudan’s government has committed some violations in the disputed region of Abyei, rejecting any remedies for the issue beyond the agreements signed between the two parties, especially the administrative and security arrangements. The co-chair of Abyei Joint Oversight Committee (AJOC) for the Sudanese side, Hassan Ali Nimir, said in press statements on Sunday that the State of South Sudan are practicing breaches in the region in the light of the continuing presence of its army, as well as a lack of commitment to the implementation of the security arrangements signed in June 2011, confirming that Sudan rejects any attempts to resolve the issue of Abyei only through the administrative and security arrangements A 2005 peace deal that paved the way for a Southern vote on independence in 2011 was supposed to give Abyei a separate referendum on whether to be part of Sudan or South Sudan. However, the two sides cannot agree on who is eligible to vote in the referendum and so it has not been held. Al-Bashir said he and South Sudan's President Salva Kiir would continue to look for a solution that "can bring satisfaction to the local communities there"
