"As part of the ongoing process of engagement with different opinion leaders in Sudan, the Delegation of the European Union, European resident Embassies and the Embassy of the United States of America co-organized a meeting with the Sudanese journalists and chief editors.
The diplomats were briefed by the Sudanese journalists on current media issues including the draft media law, the challenges for the media industry and the difficult situation which journalists are facing in Sudan, all of which the EU and the United States are following closely.
In addition, the diplomats took note of the ongoing efforts to amend the Press and Publication Act expressing the hope it will enhance the freedom of the press, allow for improved access to public information and provide more protection to journalists and newspaper publishers.
Furthermore, the importance of strengthening the freedom of the press and the freedom of opinion and expression in all media outlets, including online media, was stressed by all. In this regard, concern about the constraints placed on these freedoms in Sudan, particularly with regards the ongoing newspaper seizures was also expressed.
The Delegation of the European Union, European resident Embassies and the Embassy of the United States of America pledged to engage with the Sudanese government for a constructive dialogue on the freedom of the press and the freedom of opinion and expression, given their importance in promoting and protecting human rights and democracy in Sudan especially in the coming period heading up to the 2020 elections."
