Save the Peace Accord in Sudan:
Free Abdelaziz Khalid
Philadelphia, PA (USA)
Human rights activists and media corespondence in Sudan announced to the world yesterday that the Government of Sudan (GOS) broke its promises to free Mr. Abdelaziz Khalid, member of the leadership of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the Sudanese oppostion in exile.
In a sudden move, the security apparatus of the GOS, known for having one of the worst records in the recent history, moved Mr. Khalid to an unknown destination. This action adds to the deteriorating human rights record of the GOS and further impeds the peacemaking process.
We, the Committee to Defend Abdelaziz Khalid, express our grave concern for Mr. Khalid’s health and safety. Based on the testimonies of the Group Against Torture in Sudan (GATS), a Philadelphia based human rights group, the security aparatus of the GOS uses new torture techniques that leave no physical traces.
We urgently request the immediate intervention on behalf of Mr. Khalid of all human rights organizations, as well as all countries and international bodies involved in the peace process in Sudan. We also urge all the Sudanese political parties, especially the NDA, to exert more pressure on the GOS to disclose the whereabouts of Mr. Khalid. We also demand his immediate realease, without conditions, per the presedential decree issued by the GOS in 2002 and that gave blanket amnesty to oppostion groups as part of the peace process..
The Committee to Defend Abdelaziz Khalid is a national body of human rights and political organizations among Sudanese Americans in the USA, which is devoted to the release of the NDA leader Mr. Abdelaziz Khalid who was arrested in Sudan in Nov 2004.
