1. INTRODUCTION
We are a group of three students who under the supervision of Mag.a Ishraga Mustafa Hamid set the goal to organize a research trip to Eritrea. The idea developed in the introductory seminar “Women in situations of war and conflict illustrated by the example of the Horn of Africa”, which was held in the summer semester 2004 by Ishraga Mustafa Hamid at the Institute of Political Science of the University of Vienna Austria. All participants of the introductory seminar have grappled with this topic very intensively and with much personal commitment. So a deeper look was taken at the role of women in situations of war and conflict in the particular states of the Horn of Africa (for example in Ethiopia, Sudan and Eritrea). Furthermore, information of political, social and economical background were taken note of.
The idea of planning a research trip then came from Mag.a Hamid. We would like to practically deepen our theoretical researches and add some personal experiences and impressions. Moreover, this trip should act as an indicator of our solidarity for the women of Eritrea. We try not just to pursue our studies with scientific researches, because this does not seem sufficient to us. Especially in this subject area the cooperation with directly affected people seems unavoidable.
In our opinion it is the duty of each European woman and of each European men to take part in the development process of the countries of the South. Decades, even centuries they acted as depots of raw material and resources for European exploitative and contemptuous colonial politics. These politics completely ignored ethnic, cultural and religious conditions, which can, even today, be exemplary seen in the arbitrary creation of the frontiers.
This created and still creates disputes, quarrels and armed conflicts. Besides, economic and military interests play an important role as well.
We cannot and will not evade ourselves from this discussion. We want to be involved and be a part of this rebuilding process.
2. WHY ESPECIALLY ERITREA ?
In the course of the semester an unequalled fascination of the participants of the seminar for Eritrea could be perceived. Our attention and admiration was drawn by the active, modern women-politics, the fight of the country and especially of the women for their independence and the efforts for a peaceful cohabitation of all religions and all people. Nevertheless we do not want to forget the political, social and economical difficulties, with which Eritrea has, without any doubt, to fight. In our opinion the extend foundations are appropriate to create a stable, equal and peaceful society, which could act as an instance for the whole continent of Africa.
3. SIGNIFICANCE OF ERITREA AND THE HORN OF AFRICA
The Horn of Africa with its fights in Sudan is again in the focus of global interest. The recognition of Ethiopia and Eritrea as independent states and the insertion of an UN-supervised neutral frontier are over and over again mentioned in the press. Especially in Eritrea hope for peace is given, even though this peace repeatedly gets overshadowed by frontier-disputes and permanent present conflicts with Ethiopia. We want to help to preserve peace and to make our contribution for it. In many ways Eritrea already is a role model and we would like that Eritrea also acts as a role model for a democratic African state, a model for a modern, tolerant, peaceful and equal co-existence of people.
4. TARGETS
Because of the fact that we are a multinational, multireligious and multiethnic group, in which common interests and differences, ways and ideologies are often discussed in, we are particularly aware of many problems. This existing and extremely communicative platform gives us the opportunity to look at Eritrea in different angles of view. Henceforth, we also want to visit special Eritrean organisations and institutions to find out about their opinions and points of view. This organisations and institutions are: 1.) Eritrean peace-building center 2.) Eritrean Ministry of Women 3.) Eritrean Ministry of Education 4.) An Eritrean university in Asmara 5.) NGOs, which work on situations of war and conflict 6.) Local organisations of women 7.) Trade unions of women
But this cooperation shall not be an one-sided matter of giving and taking. We would like to give a presentation of the results of the introductory seminar and Austria itself, as a country with its people and cultures, with its landscape and identity. One of our main goals is to encourage the dialogue between the different states: so to say, our primary goal is to encourage the understanding for each other. That is why the particular participants of the introductory seminar will prepare presentations of the Austrian country and the culture.
Furthermore, a closer look will be taken at the situation of women in our home country. As examples it would be conceivable to present the Austrian politics of women or the Austrian women-movement. Another interesting point could be the comparison of the “peace-building center Burg Schleining” in Austria with the “Eritrean peace-building center”. If the results are scientific usable or if they are justifying further occupations of our group in Austria is still up in the air.
5. SCHEDULE
Our trip will take place at the beginning of December 2004 and will take ten to fourteen days. The costs of our stay will be very probably taken over by the Eritrean embassy in Germany. After the drawing up of the concept, we are interested in finding as many sponsors as possible, as the costs of the flight already go beyond the budget of many students. Moreover, we will soon complete a program of our trip, which will be still temporary, as a final plan just can be finished in cooperation with the Eritrean Ministry of Women.
6. BUDGETARY PLANNING
As we mentioned before, we hope that the costs of our stay will be covered and that this part of financing will be dropped for us. We already had conversations about this point and first assents were made. The costs of our stay contain hotel-costs, food and something to drink, and a coach which would enable us to travel around the country. Some details about the flight can be also mentioned: we have already got some quotations of different travel agencies for a flight from Vienna to Asmara. With taxes included it costs about 800 Euros. But we also want to have a conversation with Eritrean Airlines to negotiate better conditions. As we are a group of students who are just provided with a small budget, it is our goal to organize our trip as reasonable as possible.
But of course, we are still looking for sponsors for different reasons. We are of the opinion that this trip can contribute to a more intense relationship between Austria and Eritrea. Besides, it should be an interest of politics and society to enable interested students to set out on such a research trip. Trough such journeys practical education and experience can be encouraged. Even very profitable solidarity and partnership can be developed between the particular institutions and organisations, which could turn out in exchange programs, etc.
7. CONCLUSION
The picture we have chosen for the cover of our concept came from the following source: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/inatl/longterm/wor.../country/eritrea.htm and was picked by us for several reasons: the Eritrean flag symbolizes the independence of the country, which was gained through hard fights and those, who fought very hard were the women, who are sitting in the foreground of the picture. So to say, the picture has a strong symbolic power and shows attributes, which we connect with Eritrean women: strength and independence.
This concept shall act as a basis for continuing discussions. As a group of young, committed students, we would be glad if you would contact us and if we could gain you as sponsor.
