Subject: New Sudan documentary project requires urgent assistance
Nearly two years ago Irish filmmakers Emile Dinneen and John Cleere visited Bahr-el-Ghazal in Southern Sudan to make a documentary on traditional cultures of the region. With the support of the SRRA, Dan Eiffe (Editor of the Sudan Mirror) and Norwegian Peoples Aid (NPA), they were fortunate to spend some weeks staying in a cattle camp called Ngop between Akot and Aluakluak, Yirol County, Bahr- El- Ghazal.
Upon their return to Ireland the post-production of the documentary was, to the dismay of the filmmakers, temporarily put on hold as a result of lack of funding (from the outset, the project was funded from the filmmakers own pockets!).
Fortunately the opportunity has now arisen to complete the documentary, with a distinct possibility of it receiving national broadcast in the UK and Ireland, as well as at film festivals around the world.
The filmmakers’ intention is to interweave the story of their journey with footage from the cattle camp (traditional customs, the songs and dance as well as interviews shot there) and Southern Sudan to create an unusual study of the timeless customs and powerful traditions of the New Sudan in the midst of Africas longest running civil war.
Although much of the footage has already been translated, some of the songs have not. With that in mind, the filmmakers call upon any Dinka from Yirol county, or more specifically the area around Akot, and who are now in the UK, to assist in translating some of the traditional songs which they recorded while there. We also have an interview with one Nuer woman who was staying in the camp, which we have been unable to translate so far.

Brief Biographies
Emile Dinneen (Director) has a degree in Ancient Irish History and Philosophy from Trinity College Dublin, and lived in Uganda from 1993-1999, where he worked as a freelance photographer for the New Vision. He currently lives and works in London as an assistant cameraman (credits include programmes for Channel 4, BBC). The trip to Bahr- El- Ghazal was his second to Southern Sudan, having visited Yei in 1999.
John Cleere (Cameraman in photo) has a degree in Media and Television from Dun Laoighaire College of Art Design and Technology and is currently completing a degree in Film there. He has made a number of short films and is also a talented musician and enjoyed playing the local instruments of the cattle camps. It was his first trip to Africa and has made a profound impression on him.
