    Cavs Come Out Last
They Take Sole Possession of the ACC Cellar: Duke 93, Virginia 75
    By Jim Reedy
    Special to The Washington Post
    Thursday, February 12, 2004; Page D09

DURHAM, N.C., Feb. 11 -- Tied for last place in the ACC standings, Virginia wasn't expected to pose much of a threat at top-ranked Duke. Yet with 13 minutes 21 seconds remaining Wednesday night, the Cavaliers were down only three points.

Then reality set in. The Blue Devils (21-1, 10-0) got the margin back to nine before blowing it well into double digits for their 18th straight victory, 93-75.

With their 17th loss in their last 18 ACC road games, the Cavaliers (12-9, 2- dropped into sole possession of last place, below idle Clemson (9-11, 2-7). They have lost nine straight games at Cameron Indoor Stadium since a double overtime win in January 1995.

"We gave it our best. It wasn't good enough," said Virginia Coach Pete Gillen, whose team has lost seven of nine games. "They're certainly a much better team, but we played as hard as we could play and we played pretty well. We played with some courage, and that's all you can do."

Each Duke starter scored at least 11 points, led by 25 from guard J.J. Redick, but the Blue Devils' greatest dominance came inside. Shelden Williams (19 points, 12 rebounds, 4 blocks) led Duke to 38 points in the lane and a 38-25 rebounding advantage, working against a depleted rotation of Virginia big men.

Cavaliers center Elton Brown scored 24 points, but forward Devin Smith, Virginia's best player this season, sat out because of a back injury that has bothered him since the preseason. Forward Jason Clark fouled out with 17:22 remaining and Derrick Byars followed at the 11:38 mark.

Virginia drew to 57-54 with 13 minutes remaining on a three-pointer by Byars, and on the ensuing possession, Brown drew a charge as Redick drove through the lane. But the shot that Redick flipped up just before contact was ruled good. Luol Deng added a put-back basket and Chris Duhon scored on an aggressive drive, pushing the lead to 63-54.

Soon it was 74-59 after back-to-back fast-break dunks by Deng and Williams and the Blue Devils were cruising.

"That [charging call] was a big play in the game, because it could have been a three-point lead and we have the ball," Brown said. "That's Duke."

Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski said, "When it got to 57-54, there's a lot of game pressure on our team and Luol, Shelden, Chris -- they really responded well."

The Cavaliers, who went 10-1 against a fairly soft nonconference schedule, still need two or three more wins to ensure they emerge from the ACC tournament with the .500 record needed for inclusion in the National Invitation Tournament. Left on the regular season schedule are home games against No. 15 Georgia Tech, No. 14 North Carolina and No. 20 Wake Forest and road games at Florida State, Clemson and Maryland.

With Smith out, Virginia started its seventh lineup in seven games: Clark, Brown and guards T.J. Bannister, Todd Billet and J.R. Reynolds.

Bannister, a 5-foot-101/2 freshman, adjusted well to his first start, but he and his teammates were nearly overwhelmed in the early going. Redick hit two threes and two free throws in Duke's first three possessions. Minutes later, Daniel Ewing made three three-pointers in a row. Seven minutes in, the Blue Devils had a 23-11 lead.

But after allowing Duke 31 points in the first 10 minutes, the Cavaliers settled in, tightened their defense and began trading baskets. They got to 45-38 on a three by Reynolds (16 points) with 1 minute 6 seconds remaining before Nick Horvath tipped in a basket to send the Blue Devils into the break with a nine-point margin.

Cavaliers Note: Virginia is 8-44 at Cameron Indoor Stadium and 1-25 against top-ranked teams.

No. 1 Duke Downs Virginia 93-75

    Wed Feb 11, 11:49 PM

By AARON BEARD, Associated Press Writer

DURHAM, N.C. - J.J. Redick scored 25 points, and Shelden Williams had 19 points and 12 rebounds Wednesday night to lift No. 1 Duke past Virginia 93-75.

Freshman Luol Deng scored 11 points despite seeing limited action due to an injury for the Blue Devils (21-1, 10-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who have won 18 straight games overall and 39 in a row at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Duke has won 18 of 20 meetings with the Cavaliers (12-9, 2- dating to the 1995-96 season.

Elton Brown scored 24 points for Virginia, which fell to 1-25 all-time against top-ranked teams, including an 0-13 mark against Duke when it is No. 1.

J.R. Reynolds added 16 points for the Cavaliers.

The Blue Devils had to play most of the first half without Deng, who was injured when he charged into Brown with 16:37 left in the half. He limped off the court under his own power and was sidelined for the rest of the half.

But he returned with 16:29 to play and provided a spark to a Blue Devils team struggling to put away the pesky Cavaliers.

He scored nine points in 4 minutes, beginning with an up-and-under move that drew a foul on Derrick Byars. He completed the three-point play for a 55-47 lead, then drained a jumper off a feed from Redick from the right corner to maintain the eight-point edge.

Virginia clawed within 57-54 on a stickback from Brown and a 3 from Byars, but the Blue Devils answered with a 17-5 run that restored their double-digit lead.

Deng was key in that run, scoring on a stickback of a miss by Sean Dockery then firing the outlet pass that led to Chris Duhon's transition layup for a 63-54 lead with 11:41 to play.

The freshman then brought the rowdy Cameron crowd to its feet with a two-handed slam off an alley-oop pass from Duhon. Duhon finished the run on the next play, finding Williams with a behind-the-back pass on the break for another slam and a 74-59 lead with 8:10 to play.

Williams and the Blue Devils had trouble stopping Brown, who hurt the Blue Devils with his tough moves in the post and his second-chance baskets. But the Cavaliers committed 15 turnovers, leading to 18 Duke points.

Duke shot 52 percent and outrebounded Virginia 38-25.
