Ishraga: Thanks for your surprise to me, in this positive manner. Let me give you what we say about ourselves
We are a dance group representing Sudan, but in this global world, I should also say that we are all from Massachusetts. We gave our group the name “The Brides of the Nile” to celebrate the role of women as bearers of cultures and the resilience of the Nile in sustaining and connecting many cultures and civilizations through its historical journey from the South to the North. As our country has been torn apart by fifty years of civil war, and as poverty, famines, and gender and racial and religious discrimination loom large, we are trying to send a positive message through our work. A message that directs the attention of the international community not only, to the tragedies of our country, but also to the beauty of its diversity. “Difference is beautiful” is a message we want to foreground so that Sudanese may one day experience the joy of peace, tolerance, and equality. Thus the dances present play on the rhythms of the different cultures of the Sudan and its multiple rainbow colors.
