Sudanese opposition leaders arrested
Several prominent members of the Sudanese opposition Umma party were arrested Wednesday when police cracked down on a demonstration against price rise for basic goods, the Akhbaralyoum daily reported Thursday.
Thousands of riot policemen, armed with shields, baton and Kalashinikov guns, deployed in main streets in central Khartoum Wednesday to deal with the demonstration, which was attended by nearly 1,000 people, the report said.
Police arrested hundreds of demonstrators, the report said, adding that most of the detainees were released soon except several prominent Sudanese politicians including Siddig Al Sadig Al Mahdi, Mariam Al Sadig Al Mahdi and Sara Nougdallah.
Sadig Al Mahdi, the Umma party's leader and Imam of the Ansar Movement, called for a peaceful demonstration, condemning " unjustified increase" in prices of fuel, sugar and wheat.
President Omar el-Bashir strongly criticized the demonstration, saying that "the spoilers and agents are exploiting freedom and democracy."
Addressing a mass rally in the eastern city of Kassala on Wednesday evening, el-Bashir said that raising prices was aimed at building the country.

Quote: [Dr. Mariam Al Saddig Al Mahdi Mother of Three Months Old Twin Boys Was Sentenced for a Two Months Imprisonment in the Notorious Criminals Jail of Omdurman for Practicing her Right for Free Speech in the Sudan.
Omsalama Al Saddig Pleas for the Realse of her sister Mariam and her brother Siddig “ we have done no wrong, we were practing our rights as Sudanese citizens to demonstrate against an unjust pricing system and my three month old nephews have to suffer two months without their mother for this. Siddig has two girls the eldest is aged three and the youngest two- what kind of Justice is this.
The practice of unjust justice prevails in the Sudan. The case of peaceful demonstrators held in police custody last night Mr. Siddig Al Saddig Al Mahdi, Dr Mariam Al Saddig Al Mahdi and Mrs Sara Nougdalla was heard today at The Criminal Court- Khartoum South, Khartoum Sudan. Siddig Al Saddig Al Mahdi, Sudanese business man, prominent politican and father of two young girls was sentenced to one months imprisonment in the notorious Omdurman criminals prison, Dr Mariam Al Saddig Al Mahdi, prominent Sudanese politican and mother of six children the youngest of whom are two baby twin boys three months old was sentenced to two months imprisonment in the Omdurman criminals prison and Mrs. Sara Nougdalla was freed without charge. Other Umma party members and Sudanese citizens were also tried for participating in yesterdays demonstrations.
Omdurman criminals’ detention facilities are notorious for their filthy cells, flooded latrines, swamp filled grounds, lack of power supply and mosquito and cockroach infested cells. Several inmates are known to pass out at the state of the Omdurman prisons well known to be the most unhygienic and wretched criminal detention unit in Khartoum.
Omsalma Al Saddig Al Mahdi was one of the participants in yesterday’s peaceful demonstrations in the Sudan’s capital city Khartoum, she described the scene of the arrests and the following Criminal Court Justice inflicted on her brother and sister Siddig and Mariam
“ We weren’t allowed to form any type of gathering, every time we gathered the riots police would throw tear gas at us and we would disperse, at the end, we gave up. We were heading for our cars when two vans full of non-uniform policemen approached us. They started attaching with no due cause, we had already dispersed and we were heading back home to our families and children. Siddig my brother threw himself over me to protect me from a stick heading my way, Esam my cousin threw himself over my sister, new mother Randa and he suffered three sticks for that. Zeinab Moudai recived a battering over her head, she was later hospitalized, but was realsed from hospital that very night. Siddig was merely protecting us when he was dragged away by the police, Mariam was dragged along with him. We knew they were coming for us, one of the police men called for me by name, “ where is Omsalama Al Saddig” he shouted; “ I replied that I am Omsala but I am not going anywhere with you” my brothers and cousins ran before me to protect me from him and they were all taken into custody. I was with Mariam when she arrested, when the police men called out her name, she said it is I, and just went with them, she didn’t protest or say anything.”
“ Todays trials were held in the Criminal Justice Courts of Khartoum, yet we saw no justice. The witness who was brought in to testify against Mariam only said lies, the defense was very strong, but in vain. I sent a piece of paper to the defense lawyer to indicate that I wanted to testify and that I was with her at the time and that I witnessed everything, I was taken out of the court room. Mariam felt that the Judge had already passed his sentence before the trial, she was charged with disturbing the peace, inciting riots in the capital city, planning to undermine Sudanese authorities and being offensive to police officers. Mariam pleaded guilty to all the charges. I was allowed into Siddig’s trial, he denind all the charges but was still sentenced to a month in jail”
“ I saw where the detained my brother Siddig, it was a small, dark and filthy cell, 5X4 meters squared or less, there were no decks, there were other prisoners held in with him and they had food thrown into the cell’s floors- they will be taking both Siddig and Mariam to Omdurman’s prison. We are now staying with Mariam’s children, we are having difficulties with the twins because they need to feed from their mother and we can only offer them a powdered alternative.”
This afternoon truck loads of Riots police litter the streets of Khartoum, uniformed police with truck loads of machine guns and rifles watch over Shari Al Qasr. Others are dispersed across the city, Al Souk Al Arabi, Shari Al Jamhouria, Shari Al Jamia. Machine guns are held across the street from Khartoum University, Al Nieleen University and other public institutions. The streets of Khartoum are relatively empty.
