Crematorium 'burned bodies in groups of 10 or 20 to save money'
Italian police have arrested thirteen people after cracking a crematorium scam which left grieving relatives mourning the ashes of strangers.

Police are holding a funeral director, a retired police officer and crematorium employees under suspicion of fraud, conspiracy and "offending the piety of the dead" after discovering that a Tuscan crematorium carried out at least 500 fraudulent cremations over a two-year period.
Colonel Andrea Ronchey, of Massa Carrara police, said: "Bodies were stacked up in fridges along with the corpses of cats and dogs and then cremated in groups of ten or twenty at a time to save money".
Undercover officers were planted at the Euroservizi crematorium in Massa Carrara after receiveing a tipoff that crosses and handles on coffins destined for cremation were being removed and resold - as were the caskets themselves.
Officers working on the 18-month probe, codenamed "Operation Amen", discovered that besides the trade in used coffins, bodies were being stacked up and cremated en mass instead of individually.
Police seized plastic bags containing more than 600kg of ashes from the crematorium's underground storage.
Traditionally, Italians have favoured burials, but recent years have seen a rise in cremations, which are less expensive. While a cremation at the Euroservizi cost 380 euros (£270), the average funeral costs 6,000 euro (£4200).
When Italy's first crematorium was built in Milan in 1876, the Catholic Church opposed cremations, insisting that the body should "remain intact and be buried like a seed in the ground, which will one day have new life".
In 1963, the Second Vatican Council announced that if the body was "present during the funeral" it could be cremated afterwards.
Eleven years ago the Vatican ruled that cremated remains could be brought into a church for funeral services, but many priests still refuse to carry out services with cremated remains.
