Oman… An Oasis of Tolerance
The Sultanate of Oman is an oasis of tolerance. Perhaps what is most striking about this tolerance is that it is not merely an official discourse or a slogan to be displayed; it is a deeply rooted way of life that can be felt even in the most ordinary Omani.
I lived in Oman for many years, and throughout this time I never encountered a person who was fanatical or intolerant. Instead, I found among its people a generosity of spirit, calmness in disagreement, and a genuine respect for others, no matter how different their views or positions might be.
Oman has never been an easy place for promoting provocation or manufacture stereotypes. Its tolerance runs deeper than anything a passing spectacle could unsettle, and is far too firmly rooted to be reduced to a few staged scenes.
You may disagree with an Omani, and you may argue with them over an opinion, but more often than not, you will find room for dialogue and a genuine concern that disagreement should not turn into hostility or offense. In my view, this is one of the most beautiful aspects about Oman—something that deserves to be seen and understood whenever we speak of this country.
Tolerance in Oman is not a performance on a stage; it is part of everyday life. And if a hardliner does appear, he (she) enjoys no degree of acceptance.
