SudanUprising Dec. 31 thread: As police fired tear gas and live ammunition at peaceful demonstrators in Khartoum, wounding at least four people, Sudanese observers on the ground wondered about the significance of Russian military trucks spotted in the capital. (1)On Dec. 31, hundreds of Sudanese professionals -- including medical doctors, teachers, and engineers -- gathered to march at 1:00 p.m. local time in central Khartoum, near the intersection of Abdel Moneim Mohammed Street and Sayed Abdul Rahman Avenue. #SudanUprising (2)
The demonstrators gathered peacefully to call for an end to the Bashir regime, and the release of students, medical doctors, journalists, and opposition leaders who have been snatched up recently in mass arrests. #SudanUprising (3)

The peaceful protesters marched toward the Republican Palace, chanting, "Freedom, peace, and justice" and "Revolution is the people's choice."

Police and security forces blocked their path, firing tear gas and live ammunition, wounding at least four. #SudanUprising (4)

For the past several days, observers have reported death squads in Khartoum, coordinated by the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS). Photos and videos appear to corroborate these eyewitness reports. #SudanUprising (5)

Armed men in mismatched camouflage uniforms and boots, some wearing grey, brown, or red-and-white keffiyeh to mask their faces, can be seen deliberately shooting at civilians and arresting students. #SudanUprising (6)

These forces, some carrying AK-47s, appear to be members of the Amen Shabei -- former members of the Popular Defence Forces who volunteer to support NISS. #SudanUprising (7)

Some of the Amen Shabei forces riding in these trucks are equipped with batons, helmets, and clear shields for use in crowd control. Sometimes, they stash their batons

and shields behind the truck cabs. #SudanUprising (10)

    #SudanUprising (11)
Observers reported that before the Dec. 31 protest, some 20 people -- described as Europeans dressed in civilian clothes, carrying small cameras -- disembarked from a Russian military truck on Abdel Moneim Mohammed Street, and walked south, toward the rally. #SudanUprising (12)
Some observers reported that these were media monitors; others noted that they were mostly young, physically fit, White men, who wore no press vests, and did not appear to be carrying large video cameras. #SudanUprising (13)
NISS agents did not appear to be closely monitoring the group from the Russian military truck, as is usual when foreign correspondents cover Khartoum. #SudanUprising (14)
Photo: A group of White people described as Europeans with small cameras debarked from a Russian military truck in Khartoum and headed toward the demonstration on

    Dec. 31.
Photos of the truck show what appears to be a light-brown, Ural-4320, all-wheel-drive, two-door cab, 6x6 truck in troop transport mode, similar to trucks used by the Russian military, and by Russian private military contractors. #SudanUprising

Last week, observers photographed a similar truck carrying armed forces through Khartoum: White men in green camouflage uniforms. Witnesses said that they spoke Russian. #SudanUprising (17)
Photo: Russian-manufactured military-style truck photographed near an Aman Petroleum station and radio tower in Khartoum on Dec. 26. Observers reported that the armed forces, wearing green camouflage uniforms, spoke Russian. #SudanUprising (18)

Some observers believe these are Russian private military contractors, possibly the Wagner Group, which guards Sudanese gold, uranium, and diamond mines, as well as atomic energy facilities. Russian media have reported that Wagner trains Sudanese armed forces. #SudanUprising (19)
Small Wars Journal (@SmallWars) has reported that the Wagner Group, a Russian private military contractor registered in Hong Kong, and also known as ChVK Wagner or Vagner... #SudanUprising (20)
"conducts proxy and hybrid warfare and is used to secure high value infrastructure central to Russian foreign policy." For example, U.S. special forces routed Wagner in Syria, where Wagner attempted to capture and secure oil and gas fields occupied by rebel and ISIS forces. (21)
On November 23, 2017, Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir met with Vladimir Putin in the Black Sea resort of Sochi. #SudanUprising (22)
Bashir asked Putin to protect Sudan from "aggressive acts of the United States." In return, Bashir promised Putin that Sudan could serve as Russia's "key to Africa."
    #SudanUprising (23)

Radio Dabanga (@RadioDabanga) reported in March 2018 that about 500 Russian armed forces appeared in the Um Dafug area of South Darfur, which borders on the Central African Republic. #SudanUprising (24)
The Russian forces reportedly camped approximately 15 kilometers south of Um Dafug, with approximately 50 vehicles, and helicopters supplied them. Meanwhile, across the border in CAR, the Wagner Group was defending mining interests. #SudanUprising (25)
Wagner Group forces fly on Russian military aircraft, receive treatment at Russian military hospitals, operate alongside Russian military forces, and are honored with Russian military medals signed by Putin. #SudanUprising (26)
In addition to intelligence gathering, Wagner's capabilities include infantry, heavy artillery, air defense, armored tanks, and training advisory. Is is believed that Russian intelligence officers from the FSB and GRU control Wagner. #SudanUprising (27)
A former Russian military intelligence (GRU) colonel named Dimitry Utkin founded the Wagner Group, which is fronted by Russian businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin, who is also known as "Putin's Chef." #SudanUprising (28)
Photo: Wagner founder Dimitry Utkin on the far right with Russian President Vladimir Putin and other Wagner commanders, Dec. 2016. #SudanUprising (29)

The U.S. Treasury Department has placed three of Prigozhin's other companies on its sanctions list for violating Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Photo: Yevgeny Prigozhin #SudanUprising (30)

Prigozhin is also involved with Russian troll factories in St. Petersburg that influence public opinion abroad, including in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. (Hello, @WhiteHouse!) #SudanUprising (31)
Special Counsel Robert Mueller indicted Prigozhin in February 2018 for allegedly funding a St. Petersburg-based troll farm called the “Internet Research Agency.” Mueller also indicted his bookkeeper for her role at the troll farm, which helped elect Trump. #SudanUprising (32)

So what does the U.S. Embassy in Khartoum (@USEmbassyKRT) have to say about death squads and Russian private military contractors in Sudan during the #SudanUprising؟ (33)

Yesterday, you held talks with President Putin in Sochi. I would like to point out once again that the Republic of the Sudan is an important partner for Russia among the Arab and African countries.
