Washington Post: Trump shared classified info to Russians
(CNN) — President Donald Trump shared highly classified information with the Russian
foreign minister and Russian ambassador to the US in a White House meeting last week, according to The Washington Post.
The White House scrambled to respond to the report Monday night, issuing several statements before sending
H.R. McMaster, Trump's national security adviser who participated in the meeting, out to speak with White House reporters.
"At no time were intelligence sources or methods discussed and the President did not disclose any military
operations that weren't already publicly known," he said. "I was in the room. It didn't happen."
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said in a statement earlier Monday that Trump discussed a "broad range of subjects" with
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Russian ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak.
"During President Trump's meeting with Foreign Minister Lavrov a broad range of subjects were discussed among which were common efforts and threats
regarding counter-terrorism. During that exchange the nature of specific threats were discussed, but they did not discuss sources,
methods or military operations," Tillerson, who was in the meeting, said in a statement provided by White House press secretary Sean Spicer.
Dina Powell, White House deputy national security adviser for strategy, who also attended the meeting, said: "This story is false.
The President only discussed the common threats that both countries faced," in a statement provided by Spicer.
According to the Post, Trump described details to Lavrov and Kislyak about how ISIS hopes to use laptop computers as bombs on planes.
"I get great intel. I have people brief me on great intel every day," one official with knowledge told the
Post described Trump as saying, before the President reportedly relayed specific intelligence.
CNN has yet to confirm the details of The Washington Post report.
H.R. McMaster had told the Post that Trump and the Russian officials discussed "common threats."
"The President and the foreign minister reviewed common threats from terrorist organizations to include threats to aviation," McMaster told The Washington Post.
"At no time were any intelligence sources or methods discussed and no military operations were disclosed that were not already known publicly."

Israel Was Source of Secret Intelligence That Trump Gave to Russians, Officials Say

WASHINGTON — The classified intelligence that President Trump disclosed in a meeting last week with Russian officials at the White House was provided by Israel, according to a current and a former American official familiar with how the United States obtained the information. The revelation adds a potential diplomatic complication to the episode.
Israel is one of the United States’ most important allies and a major intelligence collector in the Middle East. The revelation that Mr. Trump boasted about some of Israel’s most sensitive information to the Russians could damage the relationship between the two countries. It also raises the possibility that the information could be passed to Iran, Russia’s close ally and Israel’s main threat in the Middle East.

Israeli officials would not confirm that they were the source of the information that Mr. Trump shared. In a statement emailed to The New York Times, Ron Dermer, the Israeli ambassador to the United States, reaffirmed that the two countries would maintain a close counterterrorism relationship.
“Israel has full confidence in our intelligence-sharing relationship with the United States and looks forward to deepening that relationship in the years ahead under President Trump,” Mr. Dermer said.
In the meeting with the Russian ambassador and foreign minister, Mr. Trump disclosed intelligence about an Islamic State terrorist plot. At least some of the details that the United States has about the plot came from the Israelis, the officials said.
The officials, who were not authorized to discuss the matter and spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that Israel previously had urged the United States to be careful about the handling of the intelligence that Mr. Trump discussed.
Mr. Trump said Tuesday on Twitter that he had an “absolute right” to share information in the interest of fighting terrorism and called it a “very, very successful meeting” in a brief appearance later Tuesday at the White House alongside President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey. Lt. Gen. H. R. McMaster, Trump’s national security adviser, told reporters that he was not concerned that information sharing among intelligence partners would stop.
“What the president discussed with the foreign minister was wholly appropriate to that conversation and is consistent with the routine sharing of information between the president and any leaders with whom he’s engaged,” General McMaster said at a White House briefing, seeking to play down the sensitivity of the information Mr. Trump disclosed.
General McMaster added that the president, who he said was unaware of the source of the information, made a spur-of-the-moment decision to tell the Russians what he knew.
But General McMaster also appeared to acknowledge that Thomas P. Bossert, the assistant to the president for homeland security and counterterrorism, had called the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency after the meeting with the Russian officials. Other officials have said that the spy agencies were contacted to help contain the damage from the leak to the Russians.
General McMaster would not confirm that Mr. Bossert made the calls but suggested that if he did, he was acting “maybe from an overabundance of caution.”
“I have not talked to Mr. Bossert about that, about why he reached out,” General McMaster said.
Former officials said it was not uncommon for presidents to unintentionally say too much in meetings and said that in administrations from both parties, staff members typically established bright lines for their bosses to avoid crossing before such meetings.
Israel’s concerns about the Trump White House’s handling of classified information were foreshadowed in the Israeli news media earlier this year. Newspapers there reported in January that American officials warned their Israeli counterparts to be careful about what they told the Trump administration because it could be leaked to the Russians, given Mr. Trump’s openness toward President Vladimir V. Putin.
“The Russians have the widest intelligence collection mechanism in the world outside of our own. They can put together a good picture with just a few details,” said John Sipher, a 28-year veteran of the C.I.A. who served in Moscow in the 1990s and later ran the C.I.A.’s Russia program for three years. “They can marry President Trump’s comments with their own intelligence, and intelligence from their allies. They can also deploy additional resources to find out details.”
The episode could have far-reaching consequences, Democrats warned. Any country that shares intelligence with American officials “could decide it can’t trust the United States with information, or worse, that it can’t trust the president of the United States with information,” said Representative Adam Schiff of California, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee.
“I have to hope that someone will counsel the president about just what it means to protect closely held information and why this is so dangerous, ultimately, to our national security,” Mr. Schiff said at a policy conference in Washington sponsored by the Center for American Progress, a liberal group.

جدّد مستشار الأمن القومي الأميركي هربرت ماكماستر اليوم الثلاثاء التأكيد على أن المعلومات التي تناولها الرئيس دونالد ترمب أثناء لقائه
مسؤولين روس كانت متداولة وليست سرية، وذلك بعد أن أقر ترمب بتبادل معلومات مع الروس تتعلق "بالإرهاب وسلامة الطيران".
وفي مؤتمر صحفي عقده اليوم الثلاثاء بالبيت الأبيض، قال ماكماستر إنه كان موجودا في المكتب نفسه الذي شهد لقاء ترمب بوزير الخارجية الروسي سيرغي لافروف
والسفير الروسي في الولايات المتحدة سيرغي كيسلياك الأربعاء الماضي، مضيفا "لم نشهد أي شيء غير طبيعي".
وأوضح ماكماستر أن ترمب لم يعرض أي مصادر للولايات المتحدة للخطر خلال لقائه لافروف، وأن المعلومات التي تناولها كانت متداولة وليست سرية.
وأضاف أن كل الأحاديث التي دارت في اللقاء كانت عن عمليات جارية منذ أشهر، حيث شرحت إدارة ترمب للروس كيفية التعاون لمكافحة إرهاب تنظيم الدولة الإسلامية، حسب تعبيره.
وسبق أن نقلت شبكة "سي بي أس" الإخبارية الأميركية عن ماكماستر قوله إنه "لا شيء يأخذه الرئيس بجدية بالغة سوى أمن الشعب الأميركي"، مضيفا أنه حضر الاجتماع
ولا شيء مما يروج له في وسائل الإعلام قد حصل.
وفي الأثناء طالب زعيم الأقلية الديمقراطية في مجلس الشيوخ تشاك شومر البيت الأبيض بالإفراج الفوري عن تفاصيل ما جرى في الاجتماع بين ترمب ولافروف،
وتقديمها للنواب الذين يحققون في التدخل الروسي المفترض في الانتخابات الأميركية التي أوصلت ترمب للرئاسة.
وقال في حديثه بمجلس الشيوخ "نظرا لخطورة الأمر، علينا أن نكون قادرين على أن نقرر بسرعة ما إذا كانت تلك التقارير صحيحة".
كانت صحيفة واشنطن بوست قد ذكرت أن المعلومات التي تبادلها ترمب مع لافروف وكيسلياك هي من نوع المعلومات الفائقة السرية وكانت تتعلق بتنظيم الدولة،
وأن هذه المعلومات قدمها أحد شركاء الولايات المتحدة لكنه لم يعط واشنطن الإذن بمشاركتها مع موسكو.
وفي وقت سابق من اليوم الثلاثاء قال ترمب -في تغريدات على موقع تويتر- إنه وبصفته رئيسا لأميركا لديه الحق في إطلاع الروس على معلومات متعلقة بالإرهاب
وسلامة الملاحة الجوية، مشيرا إلى أن وراء ذلك أسبابا إنسانية وكذلك لرغبته في أن تكثف روسيا بشكل كبير جهودها لمكافحة تنظيم الدولة والإرهاب.
وفي موسكو، قال المتحدث باسم الكرملين ديمتري بيسكوف في مؤتمر صحفي عبر الهاتف "لا نعتبر هذا موضوعا يخصنا، إنه أحدث فصل من فصول الهراء،
لا نريد أن تكون لنا أي علاقة بهذا الهراء، ليس هذا موضوعا كي ننفيه أو نؤكده".
من جانبها، قالت المتحدثة باسم الخارجية الروسية ماريا زخاروفا عبر صفحتها في موقع فيسبوك إنها تلقت عشرات الرسائل التي تتساءل عن التقارير التي نفاها البيت الأبيض،
مضيفة أنها تنصح بعدم قراءة الصحف الأميركية لأنها "لم تعد مؤذية فحسب وإنما خطيرة أيضا".
