EU supports Elections and Democratic Processes in Sudan

Description: Undated Nations Development Program (UNDP) facilitated the ? Support to Elections and Democratic Processes? (SEDP), a project that is funded by a basket fund of many countries from which the European Union is contributing with 13,500,000 Euros. The project objective is to support the holding of free and fair elections in Sudan in 2010 and referenda in 2011. The objective is achieved through a variety of activities like civic and voter education programs development and implemented, media support and monitoring programs implemented, support domestic observation of the electoral processes, support the programs of the Political Parties Affairs Council (PPAC), to support Judiciary, police, women and youth to play their mandated roles in the democratic process. SEDP project also supports the National Elections Commission (NEC) in its programs and logistical processes to hold free and fair elections in Sudan. In 2011, SEDP will continue to support post elections activities and the postponed elections in Gezira and South Kordofan States. The remaining activities include civic and voter review forums, conduct workshops, voter education activities, media monitoring, domestic observation, assess the current status of votery registry, train newly elected MPs, organize elections security training and to review the legal framework for elections and make recommendations to the government on areas of improvement.
