In a move to counter the Nuers’ rising anti-SPLM/A, Dr. John Garang, the leader of the SPLM/A then started promoting Equatorians into top positions in the movement. Hon. Igga played a greater role in mobilizing the Equatorians and South Sudanese into the war during the struggle. With his education background and eloquence, he became significant in mobilizing both South Sudanese within and out side the country wooing their support for the struggle, a platform that made him an icon in the party.
He retired in the rank of Lt. General in the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) to the politics in 2005 at the time of the formation of the then Southern Sudan government. Currently he is the Deputy Chairperson of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).

He led the South Sudan National Parliament since the establishment of the then Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly (SSLA) in 2005 after the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in 2005.
A roman catholic by religion, he is viewed as an elderly political son by his tribes men and commands high respect from the Bari speakers, Greater Equatoria region and South Sudan at large due to his profound performance in the war struggle. |
