Press release, 08/03/2013
As the world celebrates the international women’s day, the Sudanese Women’s Rights Group would like to express it’s utmost concern as regards the deterioration in the situation of women’s rights in Sudan, in particular the situation of women in war zones in Darfur, south Kurdofan and South Blue Nile.
The humanitarian situation has worsened to the degree that thousands of citizens, especially women and children have fled to caves in the middle of the desert in search for a safe haven. Besides, it is very obvious that millions of people in the Nuba Mountains live in severe poverty, even since before the war was started. However, the situation now represents a real humanitarian catastrophe in that people are struggling to have the basics of living such as drinking water and food to keep them alive, let alone clothes and medicine, especially that many people get bitten by snakes and scorpions, which are widespread in the region.
The government of Sudan continues its anti-women policies and the use of rape as a weapon in this war. The government detained 65 women from the Nuba Mountains and kept them in a military area in Kadugli Armed Forces Division 14. These women were kept in a most desperate state away from their families. They were forced to go on hunger strike for 3 days in December 2012. The authorities response was to move them further away from their families to a women’s prison in Alobeid in North Kurdofan. Moreover, those women were prevented from contacting their families or getting any legal representation. The majority of the detained women have young children. One detainee (Khadeeja Mohammed Badr) was transferred from Alobeid to Khartoum for medical treatment because of harm caused by torture.
We in the Sudanese Women Rights Group call upon all those who promote human rights, individuals and organisations, particularly the United Nations, to urge the government of Sudan to fulfill the following:
- Stop the war in Sudan - Deliver all humanitarian aid to the target people in war zones, especially women and children in the internally displaced people’s camps. - Immediate release of all detainees, especially those detained in Nuba Mountains. - Independent investigation for all crimes committed against the detainees and bringing to justice all those who are responsible for torture. - Disclosure of the real situation of women in war zones and immediate action on unresolved humanitarian issues.
