Norwegian aid worker arrested by Sudan John Sörbö (50), an experienced relief worker with Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), was arrested by Sudanese authorities while working to make South Sudan safe for the local population by removing land mines and other UXO, Author: Øystein Sassebo Bryhni29.04.12 Share+ - Sörbö is one of our most experienced aid workers. He has spent more than 7 years in South Sudan working in the field of humanitarian mine clearance. He is currently the Project Manager for the NPA Mine Action Capacity Building Project, Per Nergaard, NPA Head of of Emergency Preparedness said, NPA undertakes mine action operations in approximatly 20 countries worldwide and an important element of the work is to support national mine action authorities to enable them to take charge of their own mine problem. This is also the case in South Sudan were NPA under the UN Mine Action Coordination Centre (UNMACC) leadership capacity builds the South Sudan Mine Action Authority (SSMAA). Sörbö was on a 5 day routine Quality Assurance mission in Unity State together with a representative from his national counterpart SSMAA and a representative from the UNMACC when they were arrested by Sudanese authorities and brought to Khartoum. The circumstance surrounding their arrest and exact location at the time is yet unclear. - Our main priority now is to ensure that Sörbö and his colleagues are safe and to assure their rapid release.
