Rebels claim killing of 79 soldiers in Sudan's Blue Nile
English.news.cn 2012-04-20 16:10:45 KHARTOUM, April 20 (Xinhua) --Rebels in Sudan's troubled Blue Nile state said on Friday that they had killed 79 Sudanese soldiers in the latest battles on the border with South Sudan, where armed clashes have been taking place since last September.
Arnu Talodi, a spokesman of the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North Sector, said that the battles between its forces and the Sudanese army in an area 39 km south of Damazin, the capital of Blue Nile state, led to the killing of 79 soldiers, while the rebel group lost 3 fighters and 9 members were injured.
"12 soldiers of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have been captured during the clashes, which are still going on," Talodi told Xinhua by telephone.
The spokesman said from the Kenyan capital of Nairobi that his fighters "had set up an ambush for the SAF troops" before causing the government troops heavy casualties.
"We are now seeking to move to large cities in Blue Nile and liberate them, and the goal is to seize the city of Damazin, the state capital, and we are ready to counter any attacks by the Sudanese army," Talodi noted.
He believed that among those killed by his fighters were some militia members from South Sudan who were coordinating with the government leading by the National Congress Party in Khartoum, but did not specify the number.
Khartoum and Juba have repeatedly accused each other of supporting the rebels operating inside their own countries, but both have denied the accusations.
Fighting between the SAF and the SPLM-N erupted in South Kordofan state in June last year, just one month before South Sudan officially announced its secession from Sudan, and spread to nearby Blue Nile in September.
The SPLM-N, with some 20,000 militants, also fought the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) during the 1983-2005 civil war. The SPLM became the ruling party of South Sudan last year upon the country's inception
