For Immediate Release: HUNGER STRIKE AT WHITE HOUSE Member of Sudan Human Rights Network (SHRN), Torture Abolition and Survivors’ Support Coalition (TASSC), and Co-Founder of South Kordofan Solidarity (SKS) Undertakes Hunger Strike to Demand Humanitarian Aid Access in Sudan. The regime headed by Omar al-Bashir in Sudan is responsible for many crimes against humanity, as evidenced by his indictment in the International Criminal Court. In addition to atrocities committed during the long civil war with the south, the ongoing conflict in the western region of Darfur has produced the death and displacement of hundreds of thousands of Sudanese people. While there have been crimes committed on all sides, including by Darfurian military groups fighting against the central government, an analysis of the ongoing conflicts in Sudan reveals that they originate in the refusal of the al-Bashir regime to accept, acknowledge, and respect the diverse peoples, cultures, and religions of Sudan. In addition to its long-term campaigns to annihilate southern and western peoples, the government continues to displace people and destroy the most important ancient archaeological sites in the Nubian area in the north. The same programs of displacement and cultural destruction are also being carried out in the Beja and Hadendo regions in the east. Currently, fighting has erupted in South Kordofan and, more recently, in the Blue Nile state. In keeping with his decision to dispel all humanitarian and aid workers and media in Darfur in 2009, the al-Bashir regime has restricted the access of humanitarian groups and journalists to these conflict areas, particularly South Kordofan. Elshafei Dafalla Mohamed is an artist and human rights activist, member of the Sudan Human Rights Network and the Torture Abolition and Survivors’ Support Coalition, and Co-Founder of the South Kordofan Solidarity Group. In protest against the ongoing actions of the al-Bashir regime, but particularly to demand that international pressure be brought to bear so that humanitarian aid workers be allowed unlimited access with no restrictions on their work within the conflict zones, Elshafei, members of the Nubian community, and other human rights supporters and activists will undertake a 48 hour hunger strike. This hunger strike will take place publicly in front of the White House on Friday October 7 and Saturday October 8 from 8 am to 8 pm. All are invited to join in this action, standing together in front of the White House. Humanitarian aid is urgently needed to provide food, water, medicine, and shelter to civilians affected by this conflict. The Sudanese people have a right to access these basic human needs, and the right to live in dignity.
