Darfuris victims of human rights violations in Libya
Khartoum - March 8, 2011
Sudanese Darfuri civilians who sought refuge in Libya, escaping the horror of discriminatory and systematic killings orchestrated by the Government of Sudan and the Janjaweed since 2003, are currently facing various human rights abuses by Libyans; especially after the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on 26 February 2011, that Darfur rebel movements were participating in the tragic events in Libya. Most of the crimes against Darfuri civilians are currently taking place in the suburb of Tripoli, the southern part of Libya, as well as all over the Libyan provinces under control of the protesters.
HAND monitors on the ground are sharing further details about a series of human rights violations in Libya. The Libyan protesters’ extrajudicial operations, against African communities in general and Sudanese Darfuri in Particular, appear to be driven by the ethnically biased and politically motivated press-statement given by the Sudanese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ali Karti, as well as by biased coverage f the protests in Libya by Arabic led by the Qatari TV news channel of Aljazeera. Human rights abuses in the form of indiscriminate attacks, arrests, extrajudicial killings and blockade have been practised by the protesters in Libya against refugees from Darfur.
