A student who was beaten by police during violent anti-government demonstrations in Khartoum, Sudan's capital, has died of his wounds in Omdurman hospital, protesters have said.
"Mohammed Abdulrahman, from Ahlia University, died last night in Omdurman hospital as a result of his ... wounds after he was beaten by police," said an activist who took part in Sunday's protests.
"This morning (Monday) both Ahlia University and the Islamic University of Omdurman have been closed by a government decision," said the activist, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Two other students said Abdulrahman had fallen during the clashes and was taken to the hospital, where medics informed them that he had died early on Monday.
'Martyr'
Sunday's demonstrations followed calls by the "30 January" Facebook group for Sudanese youth to take to the streets and stage peaceful anti-government rallies across Sudan.

The Facebook group, which has around 17,000 members, confirmed Abdulrahman had died, referring to him as a "martyr" who followed in the footsteps of another student killed in the October 1964 popular uprising that toppled the military regime then in power.
"Al-Gorashy was a martyr for us. And you are our martyr now, Mohammed Abdulrahman," it said in large red lettering.
Protesters on Sunday were confronted by a heavy police presence in different parts of Khartoum and Omdurman, and in El-Obeid, aabout 600km west of the capital.
The ensuing clashes resulted in at least 64 arrests and left many wounded.
Ali Osman Taha, Sudan's vice-president, on Monday echoed earlier statements by senior Sudanese officials that the government does not fear popular protest of the kind that has shaken the government in Egypt but said such actions must be "within the law".
"The government is not afraid of anything. Freedom exists within the law, and anyone who wants to express himself has to do so within the law," Taha told a news conference in Khartoum.
Another senior member of the ruling National Congress Party branded Sunday's protests "illegal and isolated".
"These protests were illegal and isolated, and the political parties behind them were acting in an illegal way and this is not accepted," Rabie Abdul Ati told the AFP news agency.
'Revolution against dictatorship!'
The demonstrations came after nearly a week of turmoil in Egypt, and coincided with the first complete preliminary results from this month's vote on independence for south Sudan, which confirmed a landslide for secession.
In Omdurman, just across the Nile from Khartoum, around 1,000 demonstrators shouted slogans against Omar al-Bashir, the president, and hurled rocks at riot police, who retaliated with tear gas and batons.
At the medical faculty of Khartoum University, security officers tried to prevent about 300 student protesters from leaving the campus, but they eventually forced their way out onto the street, shouting: "Revolution against dictatorship!"
Police and security officers attacked them with batons, arresting several and forcing the students back inside the university compound, which was later surrounded by more than 20 police trucks.

A student has died from his injuries after clashing with Sudanese police, activists say.
Mohammed Abdulrahman was studying at the Ahaliya University in Omdurman, scene of fierce fighting on Sunday.
The anti-government protests have been inspired by those in Tunisia and Egypt and were also organised on Facebook.
The demonstrations in Khartoum and its twin city, Omdurman, were against the high cost of living and the lack of political and social freedom in Sudan.
"You are our martyr Mohamed Abdelrahman," activists wrote on a Facebook group called Youth for Change which has more than 16,000 members, reports the Reuters news agency.
One prominent human rights activist said Mr Abdulrahman had been shot.
Khartoum's universities are said to be surrounded by heavy security and some have been closed.
There has been no official comment on the reports of Mr Abdulrahman's death.
The authorities say they have arrested about 70 people but many were later released.
The BBC's James Copnall in Khartoum says the protests come at a difficult time for President Omar al-Bashir.
On Sunday, results of this month's referendum showed 99% of southerners had voted to secede from the north.

• لا أخفى على الجميع حالة من الإحباط تنتاب المرء لعدة أسباب أهمها أن سقوط بعض الأشخاص في نظر من يجلهم مسالة مقلقة ومؤذية للنفس والخواطر فحينما يهوى المثال لا تستقيم أبدا بعدها المبادئ لأنها تكون معوجة لاعوجاج العود ولهذا تجدني حريصا على ضرورة أن تتحلى أيما جماعة تواصت على فكرة ومشروع بالصرامة في التعاطي مع الانتهازيين والفاسدين في صفوفها لجهة أنهم قد يكونون بحكم (السبق ) والموقع مظنة للمثالية التي إن شاهت شاهت وجوه الأفكار والقناعات والمواقف .
• الإنقاذ ألان تنتشر في جسدها أورام الانتهازيين الخبيثة وعشش فى بعض أوكارها و(كراكيرها ) بعض الذين أهمتهم أنفسهم فما عادوا في سبيل حزمة أموال يجمعونها أو سلطة تساق إليهم يفرقون بين الواجب والمندوب والمكروه من الفعل ولا أقول القول لان هذا الأخير صار بضاعة كاسدة في منابرها .
• وكثير من رموز الإنقاذ وكبارها وهم جماع أهل النزاهة والأمانة والعفة يعلمون الكثير أضعاف ما يعلمه العبد الفقير إلى الله ولكنهم ويا حسرتى لا يقدمون على فعل وحراك يرتدع به عشرات الكوادر التي فسدت قصدت أم لم تقصد وفى مجالس القوم ما يفي من وقائع وحقائق .
• إن لزوم القيادة الصمت يجعلها (متهمة ) بالتقصير والإهمال ومن ثم يجعلها (شريكة ) لان الفاسد الذي تتستر الجماعة على مفسدته أنما تغريه بالمزيد ولآت حين مندم حينها .
• أن الحركة الإسلامية والمؤتمر الوطني والإنقاذ ليست فقط مسئولة عن البلاد في مواجهة الأمم المتحدة وأمريكا والقرار (1706 ) لكنها أيضا مسئولة عن أموال كثيرة مهدرة و(ضربت ) بتغيير مصارفها وصرفها على من لا يستحق وفى اتجاهات غير مفيدة .
• مقالي هذا (رمية ) ستعقبها وتليها مكاشفة لا كبير فيها ولا توقير فيها لأحد كائن من كان حتى يعلم كل أناس مشربهم وحتى يتلفت (الدكاترة ) و(البروفات ) و(الجنرالات ) في غرف القيادة العليا للغش والتدليس والتزييف الذي يتم باسمهم وباسم الحركة الإسلامية ورحم الله الفقيد الشهيد (محمد طه محمد احمد ) الذي في أخر مجلس معه ناقشته في مواقفه من بعض (الأخوان ) والزملاء وانتقدته وطالبته بالمرونة معهم لكنه رفض لأجد نفسي ألان واثقا من انه كان محقا واننى كنت على خطأ .
• ومنذ اليوم فصاعدا فانا ضد من يحشدوننا فى القاعات والمجالس باسم المؤتمر الوطني وباسم الإنقاذ وباسم الحركة الإسلامية وما ندرى إننا (مغفلون ) وكومبارس يؤتى بنا فقط لنجمل وجه (البعض ) أمام القيادة المستغفلة مثلنا ربما والتي قد تعلم لكنها تتحلى بالتريث والصبر الجميل !• وسنقولها ونمضى وقد نخسر الكثير بدء من (حق التعبير ) إلى (طايوق ) الرقبة لكننا سنكسب احترام أنفسنا واحترام ذواتنا |
