Me
I’m a junior at Stanford University, where I’m studying International Relations and Human Biology, with a minor in Middle Eastern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. I am currently Editor-in-Chief of the Stanford Progressive. At the moment, I’m working to become a freelance journalist and consider myself a budding photographer. I am an aspiring boxer, enjoy practicing yoga, and am learning Brazilian jiu-jitsu. I’m a regular adventurer, frequent writer, occasional artist, and always a dusty foot philosopher.
I was born in Omdurman, Sudan a few months after then-Colonel Omar al Bashir overthrew the democratically elected Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi in a “bloodless” coup. My father, a member of the Sudanese Communist Party, was forced to leave the country the next year as the regime consolidated its power in anything but a bloodless manner. He was fortunate enough to receive asylum in the United States as a political refugee (although he wouldn’t describe his departure from his homeland as anything near fortunate). My mother, my younger brother and myself followed several years later. We spent a year in Cairo, Egypt before being reunited in Washington, DC.
Once in the states, we moved to St. Paul, Minnesota for my father to complete his graduate studies at the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities. After that, we moved around the cities for some time before finally settling in Savage, MN when I was 9. However I was lucky enough to be able to go back to Sudan every three or four years. I grew up as a black kid in a mostly white suburb and that experience of simultaneously trying to bridge the race/nationality/religion/culture/class gap has made me feel as though I’m always between two worlds. This summer in Holland, Egypt, and Sudan, my first time traveling as an adult – unchaperoned, unrestricted, free to make my own decisions (and my own mistakes) – only accentuated that feeling. To put it as succinctly as possible, I felt like a cultural and ideological ambassador from America to Europe and Africa, from Sudan to Egypt and Holland, and as always from Sudan and Africa to everyone else.

This site has several purposes:
a) It is an attempt to keep in touch with those close to me from afar. Even when I’m not overseas (and as I write this I’ve spent 5 of the last 6 months overseas) I’m away from loved ones. If I’m at school in California, I’m away from friends and family in Minnesota, if I’m in either I’m away from friends and family in Sudan. I hope this will help those I’m away from feel that they are still a part of my life.
All that can be found under “Life.” As irrelevant as they probably are in the grand scheme of things, I know some will find these entertaining or enlightening. And others just want to keep up with my life – hope you’re reading Mom!
b) It serves to consolidate my past writing in one place. I have numerous articles from the Progressive, a few op-eds for newspapers in Sudan, and an ever-growing collection of responses to contemporary news items. All will be available on here as soon as they’re available anywhere else.
Just as importantly, it gives me somewhere to write on topics as soon as they happen. This real-time forum under “World” are my thoughts on what’s happening in the real world – political analysis, social commentary, and so on. The earlier pieces are articles that have been published before, but more and more will be exclusive to AlAmbassador.com. Instead of waiting until it’s publication or printing time, I can immediately offer my thoughts. Facebook statuses and Twitter posts can only provide so much of the outrage and insight I regularly feel like sharing with the world.
c) As far as photographs, I simply don’t think Facebook, which compresses the size and reduces the quality, is where good photography belongs. Keep in mind this is only a fraction of my total library. I try and not put garbage up on the site, but as with all art, it is subjective. If it’s up I think it’s worth something.
I hope you enjoy what’s here and what’s to come, and I appreciate you taking the time to support my efforts.
