Please join the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission for a hearing on the current human rights and political situation in Egypt. The State Department’s 2008 Human Rights Report states that the Egyptian government’s “human rights record remained poor and serious abuses continued in many areas.”
Since the assassination of President Anwar Sadat in 1981, the government of Egypt has been controlled by President Hosni Mubarak and his National Democracy Party (NDP). According to papers published by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the local elections in 2008 were plagued by low voter turnout and social unrest. The State Department’s Human Rights Report also indicates that while the Egyptian constitution prohibits torture, torture and abuse citizens and detainees by security forces is widespread. The media remains under the control of the government while bloggers and journalists who criticize the Mubarak regime have been thrown in jail. Additionally, Egypt’s religious minorities, including the Coptic Christians, the Baha’is and Koranists, remain targets of severe discrimination.
