Honorary doctorates for defenders of multiculturalism 03/03/09 - The Catholic universities of Leuven and Louvain-La-Neuve conferred honorary doctorates on 4 feverent defenders of multiculturalism in the world. Tue 03/02/09 10:38 (UPDATE video) - The Catholic University of Leuven and its Francophone counterpart in Louvain-La-Neuve have for the first time conferred honorary doctorates together. The distinction is to honour people who have done something of particular importance for society or in the field of science. This year the honorary titles went to four foreign champions of diversity and multiculturalism. The laureates this year are all fervent advocates of multiculturalism and diversity. (VRT) The honorary doctorates went to the Palestinian judge and philosopher Sari Nusseibeh (rector of the Al Quds University in Jerusalem), the Sudanese lawyer Abdullahi Ahmed An-Nai'im (School of Law at Emory University in Atlanta, USA), the Italian Jesuit Paolo Dall'Oglio and the Iranian cartoon artist Marjane Satrapi.
Ms Satrapi gained fame and a large following with the comic strip Persian polis in which she instructs her western readers about Iran in a critical and humoristic way. She was unable to come to the ceremony because she was ill.
Mr Nussebeh was also not able to be present, but he sent a video message. Collaboration between Leuven and Louvain-La-Neuve accentuated The honorary doctorates were conferred by the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and the Francophone sister Université Catholique de Louvain. This is the first time they are doing this since the university split into a Dutch-speaking and a Francophone university almost 40 years ago. The universities want to accentuate their cooperation and collaboration.
This also fits with the honorary doctorate laureates this year. The four laureates are outspoken defenders of multiculturalism. Paolo Dall'Oglio for example, works the rapprochement of Islam and Christianity in Syria .
The Sudanese professor Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na'im wants to build bridges between Islam and the secular state.
