    Job Description


    Picture Editor, London

    As a Picture Editor you’ll be editing in a busy Newsroom to tight deadlines producing high quality News items and longer form complex current affairs packages. Other duties will include training other staff and acting as a point of reference for editing issues. You’ll need to have substantial recent and relevant experience in television which includes complex editing in a live breaking news environment. You’ll be fluent in English and Arabic and have strong IT skills.

    ORGANISATION:

    BBC Arabic offers a service of video/audio/text across a range of media which include TV, Radio and Online. The service is multi-media in operation for daily newsgathering and daily, weekly and long-term planning, whilst output streams are run by single media teams, teams working in collaboration with each other, or sometimes by single teams. BBC Arabic Radio and Online and TV are a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week operation. Picture editors work in a team of journalists and craft staff in a multi-media environment. Line Managed by the Operations Manager, day to day reporting to Duty Editor (SBJ) or Strand Editor.

    Picture Editors may be required to work across a range of BBC output, including other World Service channels and services, according to skills and experience.

    PURPOSE OF THE JOB

    To assemble pictures and associated sound input from all sources to BBC Arabic programmes, and assess this material against productions' editorial and presentation requirements. To edit the available material to meet these requirements and transmission or production deadlines, and to the professional standards required by BBC Arabic.

    The following job specification is intended to reflect the nature, range and context of the work. It identifies the main requirements of the job, but it is not an exhaustive list of duties.

    PRINCIPAL DUTIES

    1. Edit pictures and sound to support multi-media reports in BBC Arabic news output: Picture Editors are required to:

    (i) Work with producers and/or reporters (whether BJs or SBJs), or to a script, brief or outline of the requirements and the story's content. Select pictures and sound (edit these and their associated soundtracks) to compile a sequence or complete story which will enhance the spoken report, fit the required running time, and meet on air deadlines.

    (ii) Keep the producer (BJ/SBJ) informed of progress during the editing process. Discuss (as time allows) the completed sequence with the Reporter and Producer. Picture Editors may contribute to the co-ordination of the visual and spoken elements of the report. Re-edit the sequence if required, to meet last minute changes to requirements.

    (iii) Work using any equipment (editing suites/desktop edit) as circumstances dictate. Plan the editing session and employ appropriate editing techniques to take account of the nature and technical quality of the material, programme deadlines, and the requirements of Producers and Reporters.

    (iv) Review and fine tune/polish items edited on newsroom desktop edit systems, or in the field.

    2. Record incoming pictures and sound from all sources (including rushes, OBs, satellite, regions and studios). Liaise with remote sources to try and improve the technical quality of the material. Assess the input for its journalistic quality, and select what to record. Log the recorded shots and complete the editing process, or hand over for editing by others. Transmit sequences directly into live programmes, when necessary.

    3. Record and edit Graphics in packages.

    4. At the start of editing sessions, ensure that equipment is aligned and operating to the required technical and safety standards. Also ensure that an adequate supply of recording material required is prepared.

    5. Complete all necessary administrative tasks and work to contribute to the smooth and safe running of BBC Arabic production process. Manage the time available at editing sessions.

    6. Copy material from archive and other sources.

    7. Assist in the training of colleagues, and act as a point of reference for picture editing procedures and quality. Explain and demonstrate safe working practises.




    Qualifications and experience required


    A comprehensive knowledge of editing techniques. Able to adapt editing techniques to suit the varying demands of BBC Arabic programmes, and the material and time available.
    Thorough understanding of television production techniques is necessary.
    A comprehensive knowledge of and interest in national & international news & current affairs, able to assimilate information rapidly and identify the key elements of the story which must be illustrated.
    Thorough understanding of the newsroom production systems and procedures, including ingest, editing, transmission and archiving for all areas of output.
    Fluent in English and Arabic
    A good knowledge and commitment to providing output of technical high quality.
    Able to understand operational, journalistic and production requirements.
    Good interpersonal skills to establish harmonious working relationships with a variety of personalities, able to communicate effectively with others and keep them informed on progress and to clarify production requirements.
    Able to demonstrate editorial awareness and an understanding of BBC Arabic priorities and objectives.
    The ability to work fast, accurately and under pressure to tight deadlines.
    A demonstrable appreciation of World Service output and a commitment to BBC values.
    A demonstrable commitment to the BBC Arabic multimedia ambition.
    You must have a sufficient degree of hearing and colour vision required for this post.
    An awareness of BBC policy on Health and Safety and Security.
    Previous use or knowledge of desk top editing systems including Apple FCP, Avid and newsroom editing systems

    Editorial Judgement - Demonstrates balanced and objective judgement based on a thorough understanding of BBC editorial guidelines, target audience, programme and department objectives.

    Communication - able to get one’s message understood clearly by adopting a range of styles, tools and techniques appropriate to the audience and the nature of the information.

    Flexibility - adapts and works effectively with a variety of situations, individuals or groups. Able to understand and appreciate different and opposing perspectives on an issue, to adapt an approach as the requirements of a situation change, and to change or easily accept changes in one’s own organisation or job requirements.
