    As part of a multimedia offer alongside Radio and Online, World Service Arabic TV made a successful launch as a 12 hours a day channel in March, and we’ll be expanding to 24x7 output this autumn. We’re looking to recruit experienced, flexible and dynamic individuals to join our team of multi-skilled Technical Operators. Our Tech Ops team are expected to work flexibly across all areas of gallery and studio production, and experience in a busy and demanding live TV broadcast environment is essential.
    We are particularly seeking applicants with experience in:

    • vision mixing (VM’ing live and pre recorded television programmes to the highest standard as well as being involved in programming the vision mixer and outboard equipment such as automation systems)
    • technical co-ordinating (operating the lighting desk, camera controls (CCU and robotics) as well as lining up outside sources and ensuring the technical quality of the studio output)

    You’ll be working busy shifts on high pressure news output, on a rota which will involve both night and weekend working.

    Job title: Technical Operator, BBC World Service

    Grade: 7D

    Reports To: Operations Manager

    Hours: Rota pattern including weekend and night working

    ORGANISATION:

    BBC Arabic offers a service of video/audio/text across a range of media which include TV, Radio and Online. The service is multi-media in operation for daily newsgathering and daily, weekly and long-term planning, whilst output streams are run by single media teams, or by teams working in collaboration with each other. BBC Arabic Radio and Online broadcast 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The TV service is 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, and will move to 24x7 output from autum 2008.

    Working in a the Arabic multi-media newsroom and studio environment, Technical Operators will be line managed by the Operations Manager and on a daily basis may report to the News Director or Senior Broadcast Journalist.

    Technical Operators may be required to work across a range of BBC output, including other World Service channels and services, according to skills and experience.

    JOB PURPOSE:

    To work in all technical areas of output. This will include Gallery operations - lighting, vision and camera control, communications & circuit co-ordination, sound mixing, vision mixing (including some simple direction), transmission control, Studio Operations – Camera operations and Floor managing.

    The Studio Technical Operator will be fully competent in at least one role in Studio/Gallery Operations and will be able to undertake tasks across all technical areas, after suitable training. The roles are Sound Mixer, Vision Mixer, Technical Co-ordinator (lighting, communications and camera control), Camera Operator and Floor Manager.

    An understanding of the journalistic/production aims of the output is essential.

    DUTIES

    1. Vision Mixing including source switching, mixing, keying/effects with or without directors instructions, operation of associated outboard equipment including automation and transmission playback. Direct the programme for less complex or recorded items.

    2. Sound balancing of live and recorded programmes, including setting up and playing in of material. Setting up sound equipment including positioning and testing of microphones.

    3. Technical Co –Ordination to line up and assess quality of outside sources and associated communications. Liaising with contributors where appropriate. To operate the studio lighting desk and to be able to rig and set lamps in the studios to production requirements. To operate camera controls (CCU and Robotics) to ensure high quality matched camera outputs.

    4. Camera Operations to rig and operate studio cameras with or without direction. This will include use of mini jib and moving shots. To advise in the rehearsal and planning of programmes as to best use of studio cameras.

    5. Floor Managing to operate studio cameras as required, cueing and communication with presenters, contributors, guests, co-ordinating guests to the programme, managing the studio area to HSE standards. Set up the studio prior to production requirement.

    6. To operate as necessary standard packages of the newsroom production system. This will include ingest, recording, desktop editing, templated graphics and media asset management.

    7. To be responsible for handling problems encountered with live transmissions and recordings, taking account of editorial priorities and availability of resources.

    8. To maintain and develop operational and technical standards in resourcing including the assistance in the planning of programmes and the resolution of technical queries.

    9. To contribute to the training and mentoring of team members.

    10. To be responsible for the health & safety of the operational area to which the operator is allocated, ensuring safe systems of work are employed.

    11. To be familiar with different technical systems, including news production systems, and to show a willingness to learn to operate new technology systems and to be able to adapt to different working methods.

    Required knowledge, skills and experience

    * Demonstrable experience working in a live broadcast environment
    * Excellent organisational and time management skills
    * Demonstrable abilities in one technical role
    * Excellent IT skills and the ability to acquire technical skills and to operate technical equipment is essential.
    * A good knowledge of English including complete comprehension of written and spoken English and the ability to communicate effectively.
    * A good knowledge and commitment to providing output of technical high quality.
    * Able to understand operational, journalistic and production requirements.
    * Good interpersonal skills to establish harmonious working relationships with a variety of personalities, able to communicate effectively with others and keep them informed on progress and to clarify production requirements.
    * Able to demonstrate editorial awareness and an understanding of BBC Arabic priorities and objectives.
    * The ability to work fast, accurately and under pressure to tight deadlines.
    * A demonstrable appreciation of World Service output and a commitment to BBC values.
    * A demonstrable commitment to the BBC Arabic multimedia ambition.
    * You must have a sufficient level of hearing and colour vision required for this post
    * Physical fitness and mobility are essential (Camera Operator only)
    * An awareness of BBC policy on Health and Safety and Security.

    Communication - able to get one’s message understood clearly by adopting a range of styles, tools and techniques appropriate to the audience and the nature of the information.

    Flexibility - adapts and works effectively with a variety of situations, individuals or groups. Able to understand and appreciate different and opposing perspectives on an issue, to adapt an approach as the requirements of a situation change, and to change or easily accept changes in one’s own organisation or job requirements.
