The world today faces a pivotal humanitarian and historical juncture as it marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the refugee protection system and the recognition of their fundamental rights. Over five decades ago, in the aftermath of World War II, the international community made a clear and sacred promise: that every person forced to flee war, violence, or persecution has the legal and human right to seek safety and dignity in another country.

Today, as we commemorate this profound historical anniversary, the human conscience finds itself facing its most difficult test in decades. This anniversary is no longer merely a passing occasion to review historical achievements in saving millions of lives; it has become an urgent warning and a direct call to renew our commitment and confront the record numbers of forced displacement our planet is witnessing.

An examination of the current reality reveals a worrying gap between the principles upon which the refugee protection conventions were founded and the practices on the ground. While many host communities are demonstrating unparalleled generosity, restrictive measures and walls of separation are increasing in other areas, threatening the most fundamental legal and moral principle: non-refoulement and the protection of the right to asylum.

Addressing refugee issues is no longer a matter of emergency charity; it is a political and humanitarian imperative that requires clear pillars:

Equitable sharing of responsibility: Developing and impoverished countries cannot be left to bear the brunt of displacement crises alone. The world needs sustainable funding and support mechanisms for host communities.

Transitioning towards lasting empowerment: Refugees today need more than just urgent food aid; they need education, healthcare, and economic opportunities that allow them to build their futures and integrate positively.

Addressing the root causes, not just the symptoms: Ending refugee crises begins with genuine political will to end wars, stop persecution, and resolve the conflicts that force people from their homes.

Being a "refugee" should remain a chapter of hardship and emergency circumstances in a person's life, not their entire existence and identity. On this 75th anniversary, the world faces two stark choices: either to succumb to the rhetoric of fear and isolation, or to champion the values ​​of shared human solidarity. We will not be able to build a safe and stable world unless security is a guaranteed right for all, without exception.
