Korean man killed by exploding cellphone
Posted Nov 28th 2007 11:27AM by Evan Blass
    Filed under: LG

South Korea, which has already seen two people supposedly struck by lightning drawn to their cellphones, has now experienced its first death due to an exploding handset battery. According to the AP, a quarry worker was found dead Wednesday with the remnants of an LG mobile melted into his shirt pocket, much like the welder who died under similar tragic circumstances this summer in China. For its part, while acknowledging that one of its phones was indeed the culprit, LG reportedly claimed that dying due to such an accident was "virtually impossible."

Non-recalled Nokia phone battery explodes, injures woman
Posted Sep 3rd 2007 6:38PM by Darren Murph
    Filed under: Peripherals, Nokia

While Nokia and Matsu####a were busying settling the disputes that arose when the phone maker had to recall some 46 million handset batteries, a lady in India has been injured by a Nokia-branded cell that's not on that list. Located in eastern India, the woman noted that the BL-D3 series battery "blew up about 10 minutes after it was put on charge," resulting in a "ball of fire" that led to minor burn injuries to the user. According to Nokia, the incident was "isolated," and if it finds that the handset, battery, and charger are original, the 30-year old victim will supposedly be compensated.

Shock as Nokia mobile phone melts
A taxi driver has called for Nokia 6280 mobile phones to be recalled after the one he bought melted soon after he turned it on.
David Crayford from Cheltenham said thick white smoke started fizzing and pumping out of the phone. The phone was so hot that it then melted on one side.
He said: "If my phone has gone up like that, who's to say another might not do exactly the same?"
An investigation by Nokia found the battery was damaged.
    Store evacuated
Mr Crayford had taken the phone to Advanced Mobile in Gloucester to purchase a car-kit so he could use it in his taxi.
"I put it on the counter and had some photos and songs transferred to the phone using the Bluetooth set - which I've been told wasn't the cause of the smoke.
"I've since been told it could have been a chemical reaction in the battery. It was red hot. It flooded the store with smoke."
The store then had to be evacuated.
"They should recall the product. If I hadn't gone to the store first I could have been a couple of hours down the road in the car, or even on the motorway.
"If it started smoking then, there could have been a serious accident. Or if it was in my pocket or against my ear I could have been badly burned."
He said trading standards told him this had never happened before.
A spokesman for Nokia said the battery had suffered severe mechanical stress conducive with twisting.

Indian woman hurt as Nokia phone battery explodes
    Sep 1, 2007
KOLKATA, India (AFP) — A pregnant woman suffered burns in eastern India after the battery of her Nokia mobile phone exploded minutes after she put the handset on charge, police said Saturday.
The Finnish phone maker warned last month in front-page advertisements in leading Indian dailies that some of its batteries were overheating after around 100 such incidents were reported globally.
The battery that exploded was, however from the firm's BL-D3 series, and not from BL-5C that Nokia recalled a month ago, police said.
"The injuries were not serious. She was discharged from the hospital after first aid," police official Ananda Sarkar told AFP in eastern Kolkata city.
Quote: The battery -- purchased with the handset in 2004 -- blew up about 10 minutes after it was put on charge.
"I became nervous for a few seconds when the handset blew up triggering a ball of fire. Then I ran out of the flat," 30-year-old Kishori Saha said.
Nokia said the woman might be compensated.
"It was an isolated incident. I guess the battery was obsolete," Sanjoy Jaiswal, floor manager at a Nokia care centre, said.
"If we find that the handset, battery and charger are original, she would be compensated."
The Bl-5C batteries were manufactured by Japan's Matsu####a Battery Industrial Co., Ltd.
The product advisory issued by Nokia in August applied only to 46 million batteries manufactured by Matsu####a between December 2005 and November 2006.

Nokia Supported in Its Battery Crisis - Indian companies - compassionate with Nokia's problems
By: Elena Balan, Communications News Editor

Enlarge pictureNokia has experienced a major crisis over the past days due to the problems experienced with faulty batteries. There are high chances that the company will have to face the consequences over a long period of time and also experience some drops in profits.
Quote: Nokia has recently issued a warning stating that some of their BL-5C batteries have presented overheating problems. In the context of many battery explosions taking place, the products presented a potential risk for harming the users. Still, this regarded only an isolated situation, in the products manufactured by Matsu####a between December 2005 and November 2006.

India has provided most reports on the mobile phone users and the Nokia battery problem. The company has offered to replace the faulty batteries with new ones free of charge. What is so remarkable about this initiative is that the number of products that have a high chance of presenting any dangers for their users reaches 46 million.

This means a titanic work for solving the situation, despite the huge costs involved. Nokia has taken responsibility for the problem and already started to replace the batteries part of the line which presented problems. The company's stores have been taken over by customers asking for further information regarding the faulty products and in need of receiving support for replacing the ones in their phones.

Leading mobile operators in India, such as Bharti Airtel and Hutch, have come to support Nokia's efforts in facing this crisis. They appreciate the responsibility that it has taken over its fault in the matter and the fast solutions that it has started deploying. Nokia will have to suffer a major step backwards, in profits and brand credibility, one that it must accept in order to reconfirm its name's having always been linked to product quality.

Another Nokia Mobile Battery Explosion Case In WB
Asansol (WB): A Nokia mobile battery of the BL-5C series exploded while being charged at a telecom shop in Asansol on Friday. Though there was no fatal accident, a photocopier and an electric board were damaged.
This is the third incident of cell phone battery explosion in the state in past couple of days.
Ajit Prasad, proprietor of the shop, said the mobile phone belonging to him burst 10 minutes after he put it on charge.
On Thursday, the battery of a Reliance cell phone of Classic series burst in a shop at Chakdah in Nadia district of West Bengal where it had been given for repair. No one was injured.
Additional police superintendent B Baidya has confirmed the episode.
Nokia had already issued an advisory asking people to return their BL-5C batteries. The company in the advisory on its official website has declared that some 100 such disruptions have occurred across the globe while charging the battery.
