Darfur Doctor and Human Rights Defender wins 2007 RFK Human Rights Award
Dr. Mohammed Ahmed Abdallah to be presented with RFK Human Rights Award for defending survivors of torture in Darfur in the U.S. Senate Caucus Room in Washington, D.C, 10:30 am November 16th, 2007
Washington DC--- The 2007 Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award will be presented to Dr. Mohammed Ahmed Abdallah. Dr. Ahmed is being recognized for his work as the Medical Treatment Director of the Amel Center for Treatment and Rehabilitation of Victims of Torture in Sudan, a leading Sudanese Darfuri-led human rights organization. Despite being surrounded by the on-going brutal conflict in Darfur, Dr. Ahmed has been steadfast in his efforts to rectify the region’s human rights crisis through serving victims of torture and providing leadership in the movement for peace.
“While nobody can ever fully express the feelings of the millions tortured, raped and killed in Darfur for no reason except being African, I am grateful for the recognition and support this award will provide for the internally displaced and those in need of medical attention,” said Dr. Ahmed. “The award is a message to rights abusers everywhere, that their misconducts can never go without punishment and that human rights defenders all over the world are working together to change and treat these evil sins to create a better world where human dignity is conserved.”
“In Dr. Ahmed resides the hope for ending the genocide and charting a peaceful future for the region,” says RFK Human Rights Award judge, Professor Makau Mutua of Buffalo Law School. “He represents the critical link between the many global advocates for peace in Darfur and local activists working to end the genocide.
Dr. Ahmed will be awarded by Ethel Kennedy in a public ceremony hosted by Sen. Edward Kennedy November 16th 2007 at 10:30 AM in Washington, DC, in the U.S. Senate’s Caucus Room. Stay tuned to www.rfkmemorial.org details.
Dr. Ahmed works as a physician in the cities of Nyala and Al Fashir providing care to survivors of torture and sexual violence and documenting on-going human rights abuses. He is renowned for creating a network of health professionals in Darfur to provide quality care to the victims of violence and to ensure the human rights of all Darfuri people. Dr. Ahmed has represented the Fur tribe, the majority ethnic group in Darfur, in national and international forums and negotiations for peace in Sudan.
“Dr. Ahmed has emerged as a nationally and internationally respected leader through his extensive involvement in Darfur’s peace process,” said John Shattuck, RFK Human Rights Award judge and former Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor. “Perhaps better then anyone confronting this issue today, he has the credibility and experience to best represent the silenced victims of this genocide as an international voice for peace.”
Since the rebellion of several armed groups from Darfur’s African tribes in 2003, the Sudanese government has been engaged in a brutal counter-insurgency campaign targeting Darfur’s civilians. Up to 2,000 villages have been destroyed by the government of Sudan and the government’s proxy militias internally displacing over 2.5 million people to date. The violence has now spilled over into neighboring Chad. The conflict has claimed the lives of more than 250,000 people since 2003 according to estimates.
“By giving him the RFK Human Rights Award, we are not only recognizing a local hero and champion of human rights but beginning a partnership with Dr. Ahmed and Amel Center to realize the rights of the Darfuri people," said Monika Kalra Varma, Director of the RFK Memorial Center for Human Rights.

No matter what we do for Darfur it will never be enough to pay back what Darfur and the ordinary people of Darfur presented to all of us...
the citizen of Darfur was literaly the symbol of peace for the whole country... and look what we made of the whole region... Sadly it's the same scenario that the greedy ctr, no matter who in power, successfuly mastered in the South and Nuba Mountains...
Let's start a campaign to recognize this Amel Ctr in Nyala...Let's begin with collecting and publishing their silent work here on this board... let's be their voice that, so far, only identified and recognized by the International human rights in Europe and US

Humn Rights advocates,
This really a very distinguished honoring to the human rights activists in Sudan, Africa, and the whole world...
for the third time, the works of the Amel Ctr. for Treatment of Torture Victims has been recognized..
1) ustaz/Salih Mahmoud Osman, the former director of Amel Ctr in Nyala was awarded the Human Rights Watch highest award for 2006.
2) ustaz/Mossa'd Mohamed Ali, jointly with Kofi Anan, awarded the 2007 Olof Plame Human Rights Award
3) Dr. Mohammed Ahmed Abdallah, awarded the prestigious Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award for 2007
Dr. Abdallah will be given the award at the Senate's Caucus Room on Nov 16th @ 10:30 am.
I suggest as many of us as possible of Sudanese to attend this important ceremony.
We should start organizing from now it's just less than 2 months ahead.

لقد أسس المركز في الخرطوم في عام 2000 لمساعدة ضحايا التعذيب بالسجون السودانية و لاحقا توسع نشاطه الي دارفور .
من المحامين بمركز أمل هو محمد علي من العرب المحليين و غالبية موكليه من الأفارقة السود ضحايا عنف الجنجويد . أيضا المحامية ثريا هارون و تلقب بالسيدة محكمة الجنايات الدولية بواسطة القضاة . و علي غير العادة بالنسبة للنساء هنا فإنها تقود عربة فان للتنقل .
أول قضية للمحامية ثريا هارون في مركز أمل كان عام 2001 و كان موكليها مجموعة من الرجال تعرضوا للتعذيب من قيبل ضباط جهاز الأمن الوطني .
" لقد سلمت قائمة بأسماء الذين قاموا بعمليات التعذيب للنائب العام و لكن حتي الآن لم يمنحوني حتي الإذن بالإستمرار في القضية .. و لا إجابة " قالتها و ثم ضحكت ..
" أنهم بدلا من ذلك يعرضوننا للمضايقات .. إنهم ييتبعوننا .. يراقبوننا .. و الضحايا يسألونني " لقد روينا لك ما قاسيناه .. و الذين عذبوننا ما زالوا طلقاء في الطرقات .. ماذا تفعلين ؟؟" .. و أحس بالخجل و العجز ..
لقد رفعت مئات القضايا من حالات الإغتصاب " و حتي الآن لم يعاقب أي أحد في كل دارفور لإرتكابه جريمة إغتصاب .... فقط لدينا قضيتين فقط تمت فيها إدانة بتهمة السلوك الشائن ... حكم عليهم بالسجن لمدة ستة شهور " . |
