Activists to organize campaign against law of personal affairs

Khartoum-Activists and lawyers have decided to organize a wide-scale campaign against the law of personal affairs, and to meet the chief judge asking for his intervention to rescue the women who have been subject to insults due to what they described as the articles of the flawed and humiliating law.

The activists have warned against several dangers due to the rise in the divorce number demanding endorsement of the DNA tests with regard to the paternity cases in the courts.

Advocate Fatima Abu-Al-Gasim told the Citizen that the law of personal affairs is strange, affirming a dreadful rise in the divorce percentage due to poverty, economic situations, the collective marriage, the expatriation and the polygamy.

Fatima said that the DNA test is used in all Arab and Islamic countries in paternity proving cases. She wondered” why it is being refuse in a time when it used in the criminal cases”.

Advocate Mohamed Al-Hafez told the Citizen that the law of personal affairs cripples women, saying that it is based on concepts that have nothing to do with religion.

Speaking to the citizen, the advocate Zeinab Hussein said that the divorce percentage is Karari court reached 759 in March and 1011 in April with 282 cases of appeal.

She pointed to the rise of the violence against women, and to the divorce due to the absence of husbands.

She said that the law enforces the woman to wait for one year and to explain in its case she is afraid of sedition. She has to bring witnesses and swear in that she does not know his place before she got the divorce. She described this as “painful case|”. Concerning the reconciliation council, Zeinab said that this council does not have the legal expertise and prevents lawyers from attending the sessions.

In the meantime, advocate Haram Al-Sheikh said that the divorce cases in Al-Haj Yousif in last January reached 557 and 845 in March and 649 in April.
