PRESS RELEASE SERF ‘Walk for Peace’ Rescheduled for 28 November 2026 London, UK — 6 October 2026 Sudan is experiencing one of the most catastrophic humanitarian and economic crises in its modern history. Now in its fourth year, the war has brought widespread death and displacement, disease, the destruction of essential services and infrastructure, and severe shortages of drinking water, electricity and healthcare. The crisis has now reached the point of famine in many parts of the country. The economic consequences of the war have been devastating. According to an analytical report issued by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on 14 April 2026, Sudan’s economy has suffered a dramatic regression. The country lost approximately US$6.4 billion in GDP between 15 April and the end of 2023, while GDP has contracted by more than 40%, according to World Bank estimates. In 2023, average per-capita income fell to levels comparable to those of the early 1990s — effectively erasing more than three decades of economic progress within months. Agriculture, industry and services have all suffered severe disruption, while the banking sector has been brought to a near standstill. The collapse of the Sudanese pound is another stark indicator of the crisis. By September 2026, the exchange rate had reached approximately SDG 8,000 to the US dollar, representing a loss of more than 93% of the currency’s value. Inflation also remains extremely high, reaching 41.61% in July 2026, according to Sudan’s Central Bureau of Statistics. Agricultural production has been severely affected for three consecutive seasons across large areas of the country, compounded by conflict and inadequate rainfall. For millions of Sudanese people, these economic pressures translate into daily hardship. Rising food prices and the escalating cost of basic necessities have pushed families deeper into poverty and destitution. The continuing war remains the principal driver of this worsening humanitarian and economic crisis. SERF’s continued humanitarian response The Sudan Emergency Response Fund (SERF) continues to mobilise support from Sudanese communities and friends of Sudan in the UK and beyond. Through donations and fundraising activities, SERF has provided direct assistance to several groups and communities on the ground, helping those most affected by the war and the humanitarian crisis. SERF announced its “Walk for Peace” fundraising event last July. The event was postponed because of exceptionally high temperatures and a health warning issued by the authorities. We are pleased to announce that the Walk for Peace will now take place on Saturday, 28 November 2026. SERF extends its sincere appreciation to everyone who has made voluntary donations to support people affected by the crisis. We appeal to Sudanese communities throughout the UK and beyond, as well as friends and supporters of Sudan, to join us in the Walk for Peace and help raise vital funds for humanitarian relief. Together, we can stand with the people of Sudan — for peace, dignity and survival. SERF Media Committee
