aCall for Justice: Save Sudanese Prisoners from Oblivion and Arbitrary Detention
To: The United Nations Secretary-General, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and the host governments of Sudanese nationals.
We, the undersigned, Issue this appeal to the global humanitarian conscience regarding the plight of "Sudanese prisoners worldwide"—individuals languishing in prisons far from a homeland torn by war, and disconnected from families who have no means to reach them.
In the absence of a functional national umbrella and due to the ongoing conflict in Sudan, we are witnessing:
An increasing number of Sudanese individuals detained under opaque circumstances, without fair trials or access to legal counsel.
A complete breakdown in communication between detainees and their families, exacerbating the suffering of those already displaced by war.
A lack of access to medical care and living conditions that uphold basic human dignity.
In accordance with international humanitarian law and human rights treaties, we demand:
Urgent Intervention: We call on the ICRC and international organizations to intensify efforts to visit detention centers holding Sudanese nationals to ensure humane conditions and treatment.
Unified Humanitarian Database: We urge the international community to support the creation of a secure humanitarian database to help families locate their missing or detained relatives and determine their legal status.
Facilitating Legal Access: We call on host countries to guarantee the right to a fair trial, provide legal aid, and allow communication with families and consular representatives.
Activating Humanitarian Diplomacy: We urge institutions responsible for Sudanese affairs to activate consular protection mechanisms and place the issue of Sudanese detainees on the international humanitarian agenda.
A prisoner is not a number; they are a human story awaiting justice. Silence is complicity. We call upon you to act before the lives of thousands are lost to oblivion
